#19 Women’s Soccer plays to 1-1 draw in regular season finale

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The #19 Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team battled host Western New England to a 1-1 draw in the Commonwealth Coast Conference regular-season finale for both teams on Wednesday at Suprenant Field.

The Golden Bears enter the postseason with a 9-6-4 overall record and 3-3-3 in the CCC standings, while the No. 19 Hawks are 16-2-2 and 7-1-1 in the conference. (NCAA Division III ranking by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.)

The Hawks dominated both 10-minute overtime periods with a 6-2 margin in shots, but couldn't get the game winner. Western New England, however, had the best two looks at goal: Katelyn Cummings struck the crossbar from long range in the 100th minute and Alicia Lewis had a shot that bounced high in front of Roger Williams keeper Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) as she had to grab the ball before going over her head, that coming with 32 second remaining.

The Golden Bears took the Hawks to task by getting on the scoreboard first in the 15th minute when Chelsea Kuzio recorded her fifth goal of the season. Cummings fed a through-ball to Kuzio, who took a shot that deflected off a Hawks defender and the ball curled inside the right post. It was Cummings' third assist.

Reigning CCC Defensive Player of the Week Briana Kubik ensured WNE took a 1-0 lead into the intermission by making four of her game-high five saves in the first half. The sophomore made two exceptional stops from close range under the 10-minute mark to go, as Kubik stymied Haley Carignan's (Scarborough, Maine0 shot with a dive to her left in the 37th minute and then she stoned Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) in the 45th by extending her right leg out while moving to her left.

Roger Williams got the game-tying goal with only 34 seconds left in regulation on a nice buildup from its defensive-third. A long pass up the right wing to Kaiser put her immediately in offensive territory. She eventually dribbled down the goal line where she put a centering pass in front of the goal, as the ball passed a couple players and landed near the left post at the feet of Jessica Valenti (North Reading, Mass.) who poked home her third tally of the season.

Roger Williams applied a lot of offensive pressure with 25 shots and six offsides calls, but the Western New England defense didn't wilt against the CCC's top-scoring team with 51 goals.

Jaques faced nine WNE shots and made four saves.
