Women’s Soccer prevails in OT

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer pulled off a 3-2 overtime win over Eastern Nazarene College Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.) had a chance to put the Hawks on the board in the seventh minute, outrunning the defense to a loose ball in the box. However, Noel wasn't able to get a strong shot off, hooking it short to ENC keeper Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.).

It wouldn't be long after that before Roger Williams was able to score. At the 8:44 mark, Katie Lydon (Riverside, R.I.) took a pass from Julie Loewenstein (Malta, N.Y.) on the right side and bent a shot into the left corner to put the Hawks up 1-0.

Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) nearly put the Hawks up 2-0 in the 18th minute, with Lydon feeding her a good pass that lead to a one-on-one with Farley. Kaiser was able to get a good shot off but put it just wide right, missing a goal by less than a couple of feet.

Eastern Nazarene almost tied the game in the 25th minute, with Katherine Lawrence (Marlborough, Conn.) feeding Hannah Scahill (Quaker Hill, Conn.) a through pass up the middle. Scahill was able to put a shot past Hawk keeper Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) but had it bounce off the right post and back to the middle of the box. The Hawks got a fortunate bounce as it rolled back to Jaques, who was able to secure the loose ball.

Lydon added her second goal of the game in the 31st minute, firing a deep shot from the right side. Farley had a good read on the ball and attempted to make a jumping save. However, the ball slipped through her hands and rolled in to put the Hawks up 2-0.

The Lions were able to respond four minutes later, as Jules Speno (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) took a short pass on the left side from Lawrence and hooked in a goal to the right corner to bring the Lions within one.

The second half saw both team battle back and forth, with Eastern Nazarene breaking through late in the period. Speno knotted the game at two apiece with a goal in the 70th minute, putting up a shot from the left side for the equalizer.

Kristen Knight (Marion, Mass.) helped the Hawks' cause with a strong step on the ball with three minutes to play in the second half. Her move picked off an Eastern Nazarene pass that could have led to a one-on-one situation for the Lions. Ultimately, neither team was able to get off another goal in regulation, leading to overtime.

At the 6:45 mark of overtime, Kaiser was brought down in the box, leading to a penalty kick for the Hawks. Lydon stepped up for RWU and fired a shot down the middle for her third score of the game and the game winner.

Jaques earned the win, making seven saves on the day. Farley finished with two saves for ENC.

Roger Williams goes to Wesleyan for their next game while Eastern Nazarene hosts Brandeis next, both games on Tuesday.
