Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team had its Senior Night match spoiled by the University of Massachusetts-Boston Friday evening, as the Beacons handed the Hawks a 3-1 (22-25, 17-25, 25-20, 17-25) loss.
Before the beginning of the match, Roger Williams seniors
Holly Hancock (Tilton, N.H.),
Alexa Armenti (Dix Hills, N.Y.), and
Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.) were honored for their contributions to the RWU Volleyball program.
The Hawks have been struggling a bit as of late when compared to their torrid start. After beginning the season with 19 straight wins, the Hawks are 2-2 over their last four matches.
The match began at a neck-and-neck pace, with neither team leading by more than two points for a majority of the match. The set saw 13 ties and eight lead changes throughout the game. The turning point came at the end of the set, when back-to-back attack errors by Roger Williams broke a 22-all tie and gave the Beacons set point. Bri Sousa (Swansea, Mass.) would then put away a kill to give UMass-Boston the set win.
In the second set, the Hawks held a brief 3-1 lead before the Beacons rolled off a 14-7 run to take a 15-10 lead and force a Hawk timeout. The Hawks were unable to pull closer than three as UMass-Boston held on for the 25-17 win. RWU only hit .075 (11-8-40) in the game while conversely the Beacons hit a set-high .306 (14-3-36) in the game.
The Hawk offense picked up in the third set, as the team swung at a .282 clip (15-4-39). RWU trailed the Beacons for most of the set, rallied from an early 3-7 hole to tie the match at seven, then later turning a 10-13 deficit into a 19-16 lead. From there, the Hawks closed out the set on a 6-4 run to take the third game.
The third game saw the Beacons grab the lead early and not look back. UMass-Boston broke a 3-3 tie with a 9-2 run to go on top 12-5. From there, the Beacons continued to keep the Hawks at arms' length, not allowing RWU to come closer than four for the remainder of the match. After a Hawk timeout with the Beacons leading 18-10, both teams traded points until UMB's Patsy Boland (Chicago, Ill.) ended the match with a kill.
Boland and Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, Calif.) each led the Beacons with ten kills apiece. Megan Pollock (Wilton, Calif.) added a match-high 34 assists to go along with ten digs. Elizabeth Glavan finished with 18 digs and four service aces.
Luczynski had a match-high 17 kills while hitting .455 in the match.
Elizabeth Flaherty (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) added nine kills and ten digs, while
Brittany McMullen (Lancaster, Pa.) had six kills and three blocks. Armenti led the Hawks with 26 assists.
Roger Williams (27-3) closes out the regular season tomorrow at the University of New England, while UMass-Boston (18-14)
