Women's Basketball takes down Rhode Island College, 80-71

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team snapped a nine-game skid to Rhode Island College, picking up a 80-71 victory over the Anchorwomen Sunday afternoon.

The win for the Hawks is the team's first against Rhode Island College since the 2002 season, when RWU defeated RIC 73-66 on the road.

Roger Williams was paced by Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.), who scored a game-high 26 points. Three other Hawks scored in double figures, including Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) with 16 points and three assists and Ari Renwick (Westwood, Mass.) with 14 points. Shannon Cullen (Walpole, Mass.) also tallied a career-high 16 points on 7-of-7 shooting with seven rebounds.

The Hawks were able to pull away in the second half after spending most of the first half in a back-and-forth affair with the Anchorwomen. Four ties and six lead changes marked play in the first period.

A layup by Cara Paladino (Arlington, Mass.) with 13:19 left in the half broke a 15-13 tie and would help give RIC the lead for most of the rest of the period. Vandell Andrade (Providence, R.I.) helped give the Anchorwomen its largest lead of the game, a nine-point advantage (25-16) with 9:03 left in the first half. However, the Hawks managed to come back and RIC ultimately watched its lead trimmed down to one (35-34) going into the second half.

In the second half, the two teams would trade the lead three times over the first ten minutes of the period. Ariola helped kick-start a 7-0 Hawk run at the 12:39 mark to break a 45-all tie and regain the advantage for RWU.

The Anchorwomen managed to tie the game at 59 and 61 but were unable to regain the lead. RIC was able to pull within two (69-71) with 1:13 to play, but miscues kept the team from pulling off the comeback. The Anchorwomen committed turnovers on three of the final five possessions as the Hawks held on for the win.

Andrade notched a double-double for RIC, going for 23 points and 11 rebounds. Danielle LeBlanc (Warwick, R.I.) added 17 points and five assists, while Paladino finished with 14 points and eight boards.

Roger Williams (5-1) opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Wednesday at Nichols College, while RIC (2-2) heads to Connecticut College on the same day.
