BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team clinched the #2 seed in the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament with a 66-45 win over Western New England University Tuesday evening.
The win for the Hawks moves the team to 13-4 in the CCC and 17-7 overall, the most wins in a season for RWU since the 2000-01 campaign. Western New England falls to 14-9 overall and 11-5 in the conference. WNE is in a tie for third in the CCC with Salve Regina.
RWU's Elizabeth Kilzi (Waverly, Pa.) led all scorers with 18 points, while Angelia Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) finished with 13 points. Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) finished with a double-double, going for ten points and ten rebounds along with six assists. Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) added 15 points and seven boards.
Chelsea Vujs (Berlin, Conn.) finished with a team-high 16 points with six rebounds for Western New England. Emily Savino (Ellington, Conn.) added 12 points and five assists, while Sam McCann chipped in with six points and three boards off the bench.
The game was close early on, with three ties and two lead changes in the opening nine minutes of play. Lanieri laid in a bucket for the first points of the game before Vujs ran down the paint for a basket of her own to tie things at two.
Western New England took its first lead of the game on a three-pointer by Savino, who broke a 9-9 tie with 14:48 to go in the half. The Golden Bear lead would be relatively short-lived, as Kilzi dropped in a layup three minutes later to put the Hawks on top 13-12. Her basket helped spark a 13-0 run that gave Roger Williams a 24-12 lead.
That run would help the Hawks push away for the remainder of the game. Vujs brought WNE within nine on a three-point play with 4:13 to play in the half (17-26), but RWU closed the period on a 10-0 run to go into the break up by 19. The second half was controlled by Roger Williams, as the Hawks never let the lead dip below 20.
Roger Williams closes out the regular season on the road Saturday at Salve Regina, while Western New England hosts Eastern Nazarene on Thursday.
