BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team has received a bid to the 2013 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship. The Hawks will be the #4 seed and host the fifth-seeded Owls of Westfield State University.
This marks the first time in school history that the RWU Women's Basketball program has made the ECAC Tournament.
The Hawks put together arguably the best season in school history, setting a school record with 19 wins on the year was finishing the regular season second in The Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 14-4 record. RWU defeated the #7 seed Curry College 76-48 in the CCC Quarterfinals before falling 48-69 to the #3 seed Salve Regina University.
Westfield State University enters the ECAC Tournament after going 18-10 overall on the year and 8-4 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC). Westfield State earned the #3 seed and advanced to the MASCAC Championship before falling 85-72 to #1 seed, three-time defending champions Bridgewater State University.
Roger Williams and Westfield State have only played each other five times overall, and have not squared off since 1989, in which Westfield State earned a 63-40 win. Overall, the Owls hold a 4-1 advantage in the series.
Roger Williams will take on Westfield State Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at home.
