Bovee gets 1,000th point in Women’s Basketball win

BRISTOL, R.I. – Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) scored her 1,000 career point Wednesday night, as the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team defeated Nichols College, 76-56, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup.

Bovee entered the game with 989 points for her career. The milestone bucket for Bovee came at the11:57 mark, when Bovee knocked down her fourth three-pointer of the game. Bovee would finish the contest with a game-high 23 points 12 rebounds, including six three-pointers.

The game started out with both teams battling back and forth in the first half, tying the score four times with four different lead changes. The Hawks jumped out to a 12-9 lead with strong half court pressure and deep outside shooting from Bovee, who had four three-pointers in the first half.

Each team went cold and no one scored for the next three minutes. Natalie Wilson (Bedford, N.H.) was able to end the draught and drive to the hoop for the basket and-one, putting the score at 12-11 RWU.

Again, both teams battled back and forth throughout the half, with Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) moving strong to the hoop and Bovee hitting her outside shots. Wilson kept the score close for Nichols with a pair of threes and a few outside jumpers. Freshman Hayley Zophin (Framingham, Mass.) also helped Nichols out with strong inside moves to the basket and a few trips to the foul line. 

With 5:51 to go in the half, the Hawks went on a 7-2 run to end the period ahead, 38-29.

The Hawks came out firing in the second half and went on an 18-2 run with Bovee hitting two threes, to put her total at five threes for the game. Bovee and Ari Renwick (Westwood, Mass.) both battled in the paint for offensive rebounds, and the Hawks were able to grab 18 second chance efforts in the second half and 30 for the game.

Nichols moved to a defensive zone and a full court press to try and stop the Hawks offensive, but it was too late. The Hawks moved the ball quick up the court and were able to get some easy layups towards the end of the game.

Lanieri had a solid all-around game with 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and six blocks for the Hawks. Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) added ten points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Zophin finished with a double-double for the Bison, going for 15 points and 11 rebounds. Wilson followed with 14 points and four rebounds for Nichols. Kristina Lindgren (Sturbridge, Mass.) added ten points off the bench.

The Hawks improve to 15-7 overall and 11-4 in the conference, while Nichols falls to 6-16 overall and 3-12 in the conference.

The Hawks travel to Wentworth on Saturday for a 1 pm tip-off, while Nichols hosts the University of New England at 12pm.
