Softball kicks off Spring Break trip down in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team opened the 2013 season this past weekend down in Florida, going 1-5 over their first six games.

On Friday in the season opener against Beloit, the Hawks needed a seventh-inning rally to come back and win. Trailing 1-0 in a game that saw Beloit's Jen Tucker strike out 14 batters, RWU got RBI singles by Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) and Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) to give RWU a 2-1 lead and come away with the win. Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) earned the victory for RWU, allowing five hits and one unearned run while striking out four in the win.

Later that day, the Hawks took on Concordia University-Chicago. After claiming a 2-1 lead in the second, Concordia exploded for nine runs in the third inning and two more in the four to take a commanding 12-2 lead. The Hawks came back with six runs over the next three frames, but Concordia held on in the end for a 15-8 win. Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) took the loss for RWU, allowing six runs in two innings of work. Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, while Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Alicea also added three hits in the game.

On Saturday against Muskingum, both teams were locked into a scoreless stalemate over the first three innings until the Muskies exploded for six runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth inning. The Hawk defense struggled in the game as six errors were committed in the contest. Muskingum would ultimately come away with a 10-1 victory in five. Maliga suffered the loss, allowing six runs (one earned) in 3.2 innings. Boulrisse went 2-for-3 while Atkinson was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Against Catholic later that afternoon, the Cardinals came out firing early, scoring seven runs over the first three innings before the Hawks were able to get on the board. The Hawks managed a run in the fourth and two in the fifth, but the Cardinals were able to put together four scores over the same span, allowing them to come away with the 11-3 win in five. Milano gave up ten runs in three innings in the loss for RWU. Alicea was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for RWU, while Tierney and Atkinson both had a hit and a run scored.

On Sunday, the Hawks began the day with 1-9 loss to Defiance College. The Yellow Jackets grabbed two runs in the bottom of the first before tacking on four more in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Milano took the loss for RWU, tagged for six runs (two earned) in 3.2 innings. Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) had the only RBI on the day for RWU, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate. Boulrisse had a 2-for-2 performance, scoring the Hawks' lone run of the game.

Against Skidmore, the Hawks opened the game with three runs in the bottom of the first and held on to the lead until the fourth, when Skidmore scored four runs to take the lead. The Hawks notched the game-tying run in the sixth to force extra innings, however Skidmore would get the winning run in the eighth inning. Maliga went the distance for the Hawks, allowing five runs (one earned) in the loss. Tierney and Boulrisse each went 2-for-5 with Tierney adding an RBI and Boulrisse a run.
