Softball drops last games of Spring Break

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team closed out its Florida Spring Break trip with four losses, falling to Mount St. Joseph 6-7 and Skidmore 3-6 on Thursday. On Friday, the Hawks dropped two heartbreakers, an 11-12 loss to Kean in eight followed by an 8-14 game to Waynesburg.

Against Mount St. Joseph, the Hawks began the game with four runs in the first three innings, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. However the Lions put up a five-spot in the bottom of the third to capture the lead, 5-4. Mount St. Joseph tacked on two more runs in the fifth, which would prove to be crucial, as the Hawks rallied in the seventh for a run in the frame. However, a heads up play to gun down the tying run at home would ultimately help the Lions hold on for the win.

Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) suffered the loss, tagged for all seven runs (two earned) in the game. Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored. Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) went 3-for-4 with a run, while Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Against Skidmore later that day, the Thoroughbreds opened the game with three runs in the top of the first for a quick 3-0 lead. Skidmore increased the lead to five with two more in the fourth inning before the Hawks got on the board with one in the fifth. RWU added two more runs in the sixth inning to make it 3-6 going into the seventh. The Hawks were able to load the bases and bring the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but a fly out to left ended the game in favor of Skidmore.

Maliga took the loss for the Hawks, allowing six unearned runs with seven strikeouts in the game. Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) had a career-high four hits in the game, going 4-for-4 with two RBI, while Tierney finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

On Friday against Kean, RWU put two runs across the board in the top of the first before Kean responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning. The Hawks came back with four in the second and another in the third to go back on top 7-5. RWU would ultimately build a 10-6 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but the Cougars mounted a four-run comeback to tie the game and send it to extra innings. In the eighth, the Hawks took an 11-10 lead in the top of the inning, but Kean would win the game in the bottom of the frame on a pair of RBI singles.

Cayla McCarthy (Shelburne, Vt.) took the loss for RWU, tagged for both extra inning runs. Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) allowed ten runs (four earned) in 6.2 innings of work with four strikeouts. Boulrisse went-3-for-5 with a run scored, while Atkinson was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Milano would finish 2-for-5 with a career-high four RBI.

Against Waynesburg, the Yellow Jackets scored early, with two runs in the first and three in the second for a 5-1 lead. RWU would not be deterred, as the Hawks put up six runs in the fourth inning to turn a 2-5 deficit into an 8-5 lead. Waynesburg responded with on in the sixth to come within two. The Yellow Jackets would then break the game open with eight runs in the seventh inning to take a 14-8 lead and hold on for the win.

Maliga suffered the loss for RWU, giving up 11 runs (six earned) in 6.1 innings of work. Tierney finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Boulrisse added two hits and an RBI, while Atkinson was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Roger Williams (1-9) will look to end the skid Wednesday in the Hawks' home opener Wednesday against Coast Guard.
