Softball continues strong CCC play with wins over Eastern Nazarene

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team rolled off its sixth straight Commonwealth Coast Conference win with a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Nazarene College Saturday afternoon, winning by scores of 10-4 and 7-1.

RWU opened up the first game with a five-run first inning. Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine) began things with a two-run single to left, bringing in Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) and Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.). Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) later followed with a three-run double just inside third base to score Peoples, Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.), and Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.).

Roger Williams would add four more runs in the fourth inning, starting with an RBI single by Molly Petrone (Northborough, Mass.). Tierney followed with a two-run triple, while Alicea capped off the scoring with an RBI single.

The Hawks were headed for a shortened win when the Lions mounted a comeback in the top of the fifth. Sterling Marino (North Kingston, R.I.) beat out an infield hit to score Kori Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) from third. Olivia Tovar (Coarsegold, Calif.) brought in Britny Costa (New Bedford, Mass.) with an RBI groundout, while Marino came in later on Sam Losano's (Elverta, Calif.) RBI single.

Costa added another run in the sixth on an RBI groundout for the Lions, yet the Hawks grabbed the run right back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Messier. RWU would then hold on in the seventh for the win.

Maliga allowed four runs (one earned) in seven innings in the win with five strikeouts. She also finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run at the plate. Messier and Alicea each finished 2-for-3 with Messier scoring twice.

Sorensen suffered the loss, allowing all ten runs in six innings. Losano finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Lions, while Jaime Block (Pembroke, Mass.) was 2-for-3.

The second game saw Peoples put the first run of the game on the board for RWU, sending home Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) with an RBI single. Petrone later followed with a two-RBI single to make it a 3-0 Hawk lead.

RWU put two more runs across the board in each of the third and fourth innings for a 7-0 lead before Eastern Nazarene was able to score. Abigail Moore (Sheridan, Calif.) knocked an RBI double to left center to bring home Carissa Cicolini (Methuen, Mass.).

The Lions would scatter eight hits throughout the game, but managed to leave nine runners aboard, including six in scoring position.

Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) grabbed the win, allowing only one run in seven innings. Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) was 2-for-2 with two runs, while Petrone also finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run.
