Softball gets one of two against UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Roger Williams University Softball team split with the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader Sunday (April 14) afternoon at Claude Dubois Field, falling 0-1 before winning 6-2.

First-year Abby Lambert (Brockton, Mass.) recorded her first career shutout to lead the University of New England to a 1-0 win in the first game. The Hawks rebounded to win the nightcap, 6-2, and earn a split of the twinbill.

UNE, which won 3 of 4 over the weekend, now stands at 16-13-1 overall, 8-6 in conference play. Roger Williams has won eight of its last 10 and is at the .500 mark (14-14), while holding down second place in the CCC standings with a 12-2 mark.

Lambert allowed seven hits in game one to up her record to 7-3 on the season. She struck out four and did not issue a walk.

The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth. After the first batter was retired, sophomore Adrienne Chase (Holden, Mass.) blooped single to center field and would later steal second after another out. Senior Megan Gauger (South Paris, Maine) drove home Chase with a single through the right side.

Lambert stranded a pair of Roger Williams base runners in the fifth and once again in the seventh. After the Hawks' first two batters were retired in the final frame, first-year Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) singled, then moved to third when classmate Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) followed with a base hit to right-center. Lambert induced a groundout to squelch the threat and finish off the shutout.

Maliga (8-6) was a tough-luck loser for Roger Williams. She scattered six hits and walked just one. Offensively, she was the lone RWU repeat hitter with a pair of singles.

Chase and Gauger had two hits apiece for UNE.

In game two, Roger Williams rallied from an early 2-0 deficit, with a single run in the fourth, two more in the fifth and three insurance runs in the sixth.

Junior Amanda Vaudreuil (Windham, N.H.) and sophomore Gabrielle LaRoche (Deerfield, N.H.) put the Nor'easters up in the bottom of the first with RBI singles.

The Hawks would get one back in the fourth on a single by Maliga, then grabbed the lead the following frame on a single by first-year Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine).

Roger Williams extended its lead to 6-2 with a three-run sixth. First-year Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) drove home a run with a single, and Alicea plated a pair with a base hit up the middle.

Alicea finished the game 4-for-4 with three RBI, while Boulrisse added three hits and scored twice. First-year Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) improved her pitching record to 6-5, allowing eight hits and one walk.

Junior Allie Frazier (Tewksbury, Mass.) had three hits to pace the UNE offense. Classmate Ali Stanley (Rochester, N.H.) contributed a pair of singles. First-year pitcher Chelsea Damon (Scarborough, Maine) worked the first four-plus innings and was charged with the loss.

Both teams return to action Tuesday with non-conference doubleheaders. RWU travels to Wheaton College for a 3:30 p.m. start, while the Nor'easters host St. Joseph's College at 3 p.m.
