Endicott takes two from Softball

BRISTOL, R.I. – Endicott College remains in first place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference with a doubleheader sweep of the Roger Williams University Softball team, winnings the opener 12-4 and the nightcap 11-0 (6).

In the opener, the Hawks plated a pair of runs across to take an early 2-0 lead. Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) led off with a single before stealing second. Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) followed later with an RBI single to bring in Tierney. Alana People (Scarborough, Maine) stepped up next with an RBI single to score Alicea.

Endicott responded in the third inning, taking the lead with four runs in the frame. Endicott scored all four runs with two outs, beginning with an RBI single by Krista Fales (Melrose, Mass.) to score Jocelyn Russo (Middletown, Conn.) Colleen Martin (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) Roger Williams came back two innings later, tying the game on a two-RBI single by Alicea, bring home Tierney and Molly Petrone (Northborough, Mass.).

Endicott came back in the sixth inning, with Sam DiBella (Danvers, Mass.) starting things off with a two-RBI double to left to put Endicott back on top 6-4. Alexandra Moise (North Reading, Mass.) later brought in DiBella on a misplayed ball off a suicide squeeze. Russo, Bilafer, and Fales all managed RBIs in the inning for Endicott, as the Gulls brought 12 battters to the plate in a seven-run inning.

Nell O'Connor (Harwich, Mass.) picked up the win, giving up four runs (three earned) in the contest. Fales finished 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and a run, while Bilafer was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Russo added three hits, two runs, and two RBI.

Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) took the loss for the Hawks, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) in 5.1 innings. Alicea went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and one run, while Tierney was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

Endicott opened up the nightcap with a quick run in the top of the first. After Russo led off and reached on a misplayed ball at short, Martin brought her in with a two-out RBI triple to right to put the Gulls up. Endicott added another run in the second on a two-out RBI single by Russo to bring in Byrne Katz (Trumbull, Conn.).

Two innings later, Endicott made it a 3-0 advantage with an RBI single through the right side to bring home DiBella. RWU prevented another run from coming in with Tierney picking off Moise on a suicide squeeze attempt and inducing a pop-out to third to end the inning. In the fourth, the Gulls brought four more runs in, three of which came on a homerun to left by DiBella.

The Gulls put up another four runs in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of the Hawks' miscommunication at second base and forcing RWU to make plays at second and home with runners on. Endicott would then set down the Hawks in the bottom of the sixth for the shortened win.

Cameron Sprague (Clifton Park, N.Y.) picked up the win, allowing only four hits in the shutout with six strikeouts. Katz was 3-for-4 in the game with two RBI and a run, while DiBella went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs.
