SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Roger Williams University Softball team spoiled Senior Day for the Western New England University softball team by taking both ends of a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader at Golden Bear Park Sunday afternoon, 2-0 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap.
With the wins, the Hawks (18-18, 14-4 CCC) leapfrog the Golden Bears (23-16, 13-5) into second place in the conference's final regular season standings.
Junior Katie Eckert led Western New England on the day offensively by going 3-for-5 with a walk in the two games, and sophomore Hannah Hill also had three hits in six at-bats.
In the opener, the teams were scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when RWU got on the scoreboard with a RBI-single. The Hawks got an unearned insurance run in the next frame on a sacrifice fly.
Roger Williams outhit WNE by an 8-2 margin, as Hill and Eckert registered singles.
Sophomore Emily Mastropaolo, who went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, doubled home a run in the bottom of the first inning to give Western New England a 1-0 lead to start the second game.
Junior Maria Francese, Eckert and Hill joined Mastropaolo with all two hits each.
Roger Williams countered with a run-scoring double of its own in the third, but WNE reclaimed the lead 2-1 on a passed ball in the fifth.
The Hawks, however, went back up on top after slamming a two-run homer.
Roger Williams will host Framingham State on Wednesday in their regular season finale.
