Softball takes two on Senior Day

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team closed out the regular season with a doubleheader sweep over Framingham State University Friday afternoon, taking the games by scores of 7-3 and 8-1.

Prior to the second game, the Hawks honored senior captain Lauren Tierney (Middleboro, Mass.) for her contributions to the program over the past four years. Tierney was also honored by the Commonwealth Coast Conference earlier in the day by being named Co-CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year and CCC Player of the Year.

In the opener, the Rams took advantage of a Hawk miscue to score their first run. Kyle Fortin (Candia, N.H.) reached on an error and later scored on a bases-loaded walk by Taylor Ezold (Westfield, Mass.).

The lead didn't last long, as RWU was able to escape a bases-loaded, one-out jam with only that one run given up and coming back with three in the bottom of the inning. CCC Rookie of the Year Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) brought in Tierney with an RBI single to tie the game. Caroline Atkinson (Medford, Mass.) later scored Alicea and Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine) to make it 3-1 in favor of RWU.

RWU put three more across the board in the third, beginning with a two-RBI double by Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.). She would score on a wild pitch and an overthrown ball to third, giving the Hawks a 6-1 advantage.

The Hawks added another run in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Alicea and looked on their way to an easy win. However, the Rams made a rally in the top of the seventh. Jess Anthony (Stoneham, Mass.) knocked a two-out RBI double to left to score Helen Falzone (Ashland, Mass.), then later came in on an RBI single by Fortin. The rally fell short, though, as a groundout to second gave RWU the win.

Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) earned the win, going six innings and giving up one unearned run with nine strikeouts. Peoples finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Alicea was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Adriana Faria (Acton, Mass.) suffered the loss, giving up seven runs (five earned) in six innings. Alyssa Begin (Salem, Mass.) finished 3-for-4 with a run and an BRI, while Tiffany Agostini (Rehoboth, Mass.) went 2-for-4.

The second game saw the Hawks jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first, with Tierney scoring on a wild pitch and Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) coming in on an RBI single by Alicea. Tierney came through with an RBI single of her own in the second to give RWU a 3-0 lead.

The Rams were able to get one of the runs back in the third, when Andrea Smith (Gardiner, Mass.) scored on Kelly Naegelin's (Scituate, Mass.) RBI single, but the Hawks came back with two more in the fourth to make it a 5-1 game.

Roger Williams brought across three more runs in the sixth, getting RBIs from Tierney and Boulrisse to take a commanding 8-1 lead. RWU would collect the win after getting a four-batter seventh from the Rams.

Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) picked up the win, going seven innings and allowing only one run with four strikeouts. Tierney had a strong game, going 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI, while Boulrisse was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Maliga added two hits and two runs as well.

Alexandria Ferri (Framingham, Mass.) was tagged for eight runs (six earned) in six innings. Smith and Fortin each finished 2-for-3 with Smith adding a run. Naegelin was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Jaleisa Rookard (Cambridge, Mass.) notched a pinch-hit single in the seventh.

Roger Williams (20-18) will host the second round of the playoffs on Monday at 2:30 p.m., while Framingham State (9-27) wraps up the year tomorrow against Bridgewater State.
