Softball takes doubleheader from Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. — The Roger Williams University Softball team improved to 8-12 on the season with a pair of wins over Gordon College's Fighting Scots in today's doubleheader, winning 10-0 and 11-1 (6).

The Hawks began game one with a trio of singles from Lauren Tierney (Sr./Middleboro, Mass.), Chelsea Boulrisse (Fr./Bourne, Mass.), and Veronica Alicea (Fr./Trumbull, Conn.) to take a 1-0 lead with no outs. Gordon's Gianna Palermo (Fr./Hope, R.I.) matched their offensive intensity with a heads up double play on a line drive to third base that helped the Scots close out the inning with no more damage.

Through the fourth inning the pitchers' duel seemed evenly matched with the Hawks recording just one more hit and the Scots tallying only three. Well timed Roger Williams hits and two key Gordon errors led to a four run fifth inning for the Hawks that set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. RWU went on to score five more runs in the 10-0 shutout, allowing just one more hit from the Scots.

The Hawks were led by Tierney who went 3-4 with one RBI, Alicea who knocked in three runs on two hits, and Caroline Atkinson (So./Milford, Mass.) who used a pair of doubles to drive in two runs. On the mound for Roger Williams was Meghan Maliga (Fr./Suffield, Conn.) who logged her fifth win of the year in the four-hitter, with Cayla McCarthy (So./Shelburne, Vt.) entering the game in relief in the seventh inning.

Shining for the Scots in game one was Rachel Ryder (So./Telford, Pa.) who was perfect at the plate with three of Gordon's four hits. Junior pitcher Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.) completed seven innings of work for the Scots, giving up two earned runs on 11 hits, while striking out six and walking three.

Game two was all about the Hawks with the afternoon ending with the Scots down 11-1 in the sixth inning. Tierney and Alicea again led the way for RWU with two RBIs apiece on three hits and two hits, respectively. Teammate Tori Milano (Fr./Eastchester, N.Y.) chipped in two RBIs of her own for the Hawks.

The only hits for Gordon of game two were singles coming from Kara Pepper (So./Wyckoff, N.J.), Bareford, and Marissa Meenan (Fr./Wayne, Pa.).

The Scots play again on Tuesday April 9 as they travel to face CCC foe Endicott College at 3:00p.m., while RWU gets back to action tomorrow April 7, hosting Nichols for a doubleheader beginning at 4:00p.m.
