#13 Women’s Soccer ties with #20 MIT

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The #13th-ranked Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team played to a 1-1 double overtime draw against the #20th-ranked Engineers of MIT Tuesday afternoon.

Today's match marked the first time in history of the brief series that both teams entered the game as nationally-ranked teams. MIT held a 2-0-0 lead against the Hawks entering the day, though both wins were by a single goal.

The play early on was marked by strong play in the midfield, as both teams challenged for balls in the air and for position on passes on the ground.

MIT struck gold early, scoring in the 15th minute of the game. Samantha Fleischmann (Eastchester, N.Y.) served up a corner from the left side towards the back side of the net. Michaelann Rodriguez (Florence, Ala.) was able to bounce a header into the ground and past a diving Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) into the net to give MIT a 1-0 lead.

MIT's lead held on into the second half, until the Hawks were able to tie the game at one apiece. At the 68:04 mark, Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.) made her way down the left side and put a pass across the box to Kristin Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.), who fired a shot in to knot the contest.

The Hawks had a great opportunity to put a shot on net in the final minute of regulation. Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) attempted a pass to a streaking and open Katie Lydon (Riverside, R.I.). Unfortunately for Kaiser, her ball was behind Lydon, missing a chance for a shot and sending the game to overtime.

In the first overtime, both teams had a great chance to end the game. With under a minute to play, MIT's Ambika Krishnamachar (Darien, Conn.) found herself with facing the opposite way with the ball by her foot and attempted a back-kick to score the game winner. Jaques came through for RWU with a diving stop to hold off the Engineers.

On the counterattack, Taylor Provost (Peabody, Mass.) put up a shot in the waning seconds that just sailed wide of the net to extend the game to another OT. The second overtime saw MIT held without a shot, while RWU attempted two shots that were saved by Lauren Ullmann (Princeton, N.J.).

Jaques finished the game with three saves on the day, while Ullman made five stops.

Roger Williams (6-0-1) hosts Endicott College while MIT (4-1-2) hosts WPI next, both games on Saturday.
