BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team dropped its second straight contest, falling 1-2 to Springfield College in overtime Tuesday afternoon.
The game began with both teams fighting for position on all balls on the ground in the air. Open shots clean pass were hard to come by early on in the contest.
Springfield was able to break through in the 17th minute, when Kim Rassmussen (East Berlin, Conn.) made her way down the field around a few Hawk defenders. She was able to put a shot up from the top of the box to score her second goal of the season and put the Pride on top 1-0.
The Hawks came back later in the period. Jessica Valenti (North Reading, Mass.) gave a long through pass between three Pride defenders to find Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.). Noel was able to secure the ball, make her way inside the penalty area, and fire a shot to the right side of the net to tie the game at one apiece.
In the second half, both teams' offensive opportunities began to increase. In the 55th minute, Rasmussen shot a pass up the middle to Mariah Fererra (North Adams, Mass.). Fererra had a one-on-one opportunity with Hawk keeper Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.), but Jaques was able to make a great head-on save of Fererra's attempt.
Later on in the period, the Hawks had two great chances to put a goal on the board. In the 61st minute, a missed clear outside the box by Pride keeper Sarah Myers (Bridgewater, Mass.) led to a loose ball picked up by Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.). Kaiser had an outside chance for a deep shot from the middle of the field as Myers was making her way back to net, but held back for the rest of the offensive unit to come into play.
Three minutes later, Noel found herself with a similar opportunity, dribbling the ball down the field and a chance at a deep shot with Springfield's keeper backpedaling to the net. Myers was able to make her way back and get into position, eventually saving Noel's attempt..
Springfield's Brooke Hattinger (Weymouth, Mass.) had a good look with three minutes left to play in regulation but had her attempt sail just high over the net.
In overtime, Elizabeth Monsen (Wayne, N.J.) nearly ended the game in the first minute, chipping a cleared ball off of a corner that just curved right. Five minutes later, Ashley Carressi (Billerica, Mass.) would give Springfield the win. She was able to find a loose ball after a corner kick, putting a shot off a Hawk defender and in for her first score of the season.
Roger Williams (6-2-1) hosts Bridgewater State on Thursday evening, while Springfield (5-2-0) goes to MIT Saturday afternoon.
