SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The #18th-ranked Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team defeated Westfield State University, 1-0 Friday in double overtime at the Springfield College Invitational.
The Hawks capitalized early in the second overtime period. Kristen Casey (East Longmeadow, Mass.) took the free kick from 30 yards out and Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) dribbled through several defenders. Tetreault sent a shot from five yards out into the left corner of the goal for the game-winner just 1:35 in.
Westfield State's Sarah Sypek (Westhampton, Mass.) almost ended it in the first overtime on a feed from Ashley Bovat (Westfield, Mass.), but Roger Williams' goalie Stephanie Jacques (Burlington, Vt.) made a kick save to preserve the scoreless game.
Westfield State's Jess Habif (Natick, Mass.) had a solid game in goal for the Owls. The senior made the save of the game with 22 seconds left in regulation. Roger Williams' Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.) had a one-on-one opportunity as the clock was winding down, but Habif made the stop to send the game into overtime.
Roger Williams will take on the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Saturday at 5:00 p.m. Westfield State will play Springfield in the second game of the Springfield College Invitational at 7:15.
