Softball looking to end Spring Break skid

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team finds itself halfway through its Spring Break trip and looking to half a five-game streak on the wrong side of the win-loss column.

Saturday afternoon saw RWU drop a 5-7 decision to Mitchell College in the first game of the day. The Hawks trailed 1-2 after two before Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) and Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) scored in the third to regain the lead for the Hawks. However, the Mariners managed to take advantage of a pair of Hawk errors to put up five runs in the bottom of the sixth to go back up by four. RWU answered with two runs in the seventh but stranded the tying run at second in the loss.

In the following game against Simpson, the Hawks collected only two hits in the game—a pair of singles by Samantha Mittel (Palm Coast, Fla.) and Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.). In the circle, Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) was touched for eight runs in 3.2 innings, tying her second shortest outing of her career.

Sunday against Marietta saw the Hawks fall behind 0-3 after five innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Messier came through with a two-RBI single to bring in Molly Petrone and Alexandria Curioso. However, the next eight RWU batters would be set down in order to end the put away the game.

The team's following game against Muskingum began similar to the previous contest, with RWU falling behind early before a late rally. The Muskies put across two runs in each of the third and fifth innings for a 4-0 lead. The Hawks got three runs in the sixth thanks to a two-RBI double by Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) and an RBI single by Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine). However, RWU was unable to notch the game-tying hit and Muskingum escaped with a one-run win.

Over the course of the weekend, Messier and Boulrisse each tallied four hits and two runs scored, with Messier adding a pair of RBI. Maliga and Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) each finished 0-2 in two starts, with both hurlers striking out six.

Roger Williams (1-5) takes on Mount St. Joseph and Catholic on Wednesday.
