Softball takes two in final Spring Break doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team concluded its Spring Break trip with a pair of wins Thursday, including a five-inning 14-4 win over Skidmore and a 5-2 win over Waynesburg.

Against Skidmore, the Hawks jumped out to an early lead, as the Hawks tacked on eight runs in the first three innings.

A two-run single by Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) and a two-run triple by Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, R.I.) during the first inning and an RBI single by Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.), an RBI single by Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.), an RBI double by Atkinson, and a sacrifice fly by Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, N.J.) in the second inning fueled Hawks' offense early.

The Hawks piled on two more runs in the top of the fourth. Vesce kicked things off with a single, plating Burns, followed by Grosso's RBI single.

RWU added four more runs in the top of the fifth. A sacrifice fly scored Molly Petrone (Northborough, Mass.) to get the Hawks on the board in the inning. Later in the inning, Caitlin Downes (Southington, Conn.) came home from third on a double steal.

Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) got the win for Hawks. She allowed two runs over three innings. She struck out one, walked none and surrendered three hits. Burns went a perfect 2-for-2 at the dish for the Hawks with three runs and two RBI. Vesce was 2-for-3 with a run and four RBI.

In the nightcap, Waynesburg out-hit Hawks eight to seven but stranded eight runners on base.

In the top of the first, Waynesburg grabbed the early lead, 1-0, but the Hawks went on top after the second, scoring two runs on a pair of sacrifice flies. RWU scored on a groundout by Samantha Mittel (Palm Coast, Fla.) added one more in the third on an RBI groundout.

The Hawks would then tack on another two runs in the sixth. Atkinson kicked things off with a double, scoring Alexandra Curioso (Pawcatuck, Conn.). Atkinson would later come home on an RBI single by Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.).

Maliga racked up seven strikeouts in the Hawks win. She allowed one earned run on eight hits and no walks over seven innings. Mittel and Maliga each finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

RWU will head to Coast Guard on March 19.
