Softball notches doubleheader sweep in first home games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team made its 2014 home debut Thursday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep over Coast Guard Academy, beginning with an 8-inning, 5-4 win and a 4-3 victory.

Coast Guard jumped on top of the Hawks 3-0 early in the first game. In the top of the third, Cherokee Strickland (Vancleave, Miss.) brought in Erin Lisko (Waynesboro, Pa.) and Kelly Grills (Pawcatuck, Conn.) with a two-out, two-RBI single. Strickland would then come around to score on the following at-bat on an RBI double by Erin Reynolds (Valrico, Fla.).

The Hawks got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, with Caitlin Downes (Milford, Mass.) scoring on an RBI single from Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.). However, Coast Guard's Jessie Richardson (Kent, Wash.) put the Bears back up to on another RBI single from Strickland.

From that point, the Hawks began to rally, beginning with a two-RBI double from Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) to score Meredith Moise (North Reading, Mass.) and Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) in the fifth. Samantha Mittel (Palm Coast, Fla.) would notch the game-tying hit in the sixth, bringing home Alicia McCauley (North Reading, Mass.).

After a scoreless seventh, Boulrisse gave RWU its first home win of the year in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single.

Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) earned her third win of the year, going all eight innings with five strikeouts. Boulrisse finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Downes was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.

Kristine Kahl (Monmouth, Maine) took the loss, giving up five runs (one earned) in 7.1 innings. Strickland was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run, while Reynolds was also 3-for-4 with an RBI.

In the nightcap, Reynolds began things for the Bears with a two-run double in the top of the first for a quick 2-0 lead. RWU would answer right back in the bottom of the inning, getting two runs from Mittel and Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.).

Coast Guard regained the lead in the fourth on Richardson's RBI single, but the Hawks managed to go back on top in the bottom of the inning. Downes and Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) put RWU up 4-3 on Messier's single that ultimately proved to be the game-winning hit.

The Bears threated to tie in the seventh on Reynolds' two-out double, but Milano was able to induce a pop-up to get the third out and get the win.

Milano allowed three runs in seven innings of work in the win. Messier was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Mittel was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Sarah Sorensen (Lakewood, Wash.) took the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) in six innings, Richardson and Reynolds each finished 2-for-4, picking up all three RBI between them.

Roger Williams (5-5) will host Rhode Island College tomorrow at 4:00 p.m., while Coast Guard (6-6) heads to Springfield on Sunday.
