RIC takes doubleheader from Softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – Rhode Island College walked away with a pair of wins in a doubleheader matchup against the Roger Williams University Softball team on Friday, winning 6-1 and 14-5 (6).

In the first game. the Anchorwomen were the first to strike after on a suicide squeeze by sophomore Tori Lussier (North Franklin, Conn.) in the top of the second brought home a runner on base.

Roger Williams looked like they had an answer in the bottom of the third after a Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) double advanced a runner to third on two outs, but a ground out stranded two runners and the Anchormen stayed on top at 1-0 after three.

The top of the fourth was another effective inning for RIC after a trio of doubles by Justina Thoma (Canterbury, Conn.), Kristina Gingell (Pascoag, R.I.), and Lussier brought in two more runs to put them up 3-0.

Pitcher Michelle Sylvestre for the Anchormen forced the next three Hawk batters into a ground out and two fly outs at the top of the fifth, which kept the momentum going for her teammates on offense.

After a groundball single and stolen base by freshman Sarah Molin (Seymore, Conn.) a Katelyn Sykora (Waterford, Conn.) line drive to left brought her home to put the Anchormen up 4-0 after five.

The Hawks looked to rally again after a Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) leadoff single in the bottom of the inning, but RIC's defense was playing their best game and ended the inning on a pretty double play started by Sykora.

Abigail Francis (Worcester, Mass.) hit a leadoff double in the top of the final inning, which would result in Lindsey Cabral (North Providence, R.I.) RBI double and the final run of the game for RIC.

Samantha Mittel (Palm Coast, Fl.) led off the bottom of the seventh with a spark on a line drive single. Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) recorded a single of her own and another single by junior Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine) would bring Mittel home to give the Hawks their only run of the game.

The Anchorwomen continued to be hot from the plate at the beginning of the second game after a pair of singles by Sykora and Cabral and a Lauren Duvall (East Greenwich, R.I.) infield bunt hit would quickly put them up 2-0.

Gingell would single again for RIC sending home another runner with no outs in the inning to put them up 3-0 before pitcher Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) would force a ground out and two popouts to get the Hawks out of the inning.

Roger Williams had an answer after a solid defensive performance in the top of the second. A lead off walk for Meredith Moise (N. Reading, Mass.) and a Sigita Ivaska (Gibsonia, Pa.) single would put the runners in scoring position for sophomore Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) who knocked in two RBIs on a double.

RIC continued to get runners on base in the top of the third and would take a 6-2 lead by the end of their at-bat. From there the Hawks struggled to find their offense as the Anchormen continued to heat up.

Hits by Cabral, Thoma, and Stacy Pokora (Wilton, Conn.) plus a few wild pitches gave the Anchormen an 8-2 advantage going into the bottom of the fourth.

After a 1-2-3 inning for RIC, another run in the top of the fifth put them on top 9-2 before they really let it fly in the sixth. A fly ball double to right field by Mary Sweeney (Portsmouth, R.I.) a few more wild pitches, and an RBI double later, RIC was on top 12-2 with just one out in the top of the sixth.

Duvall and Thoma would single before the inning ended giving the Anchormen their 13th and 14th runs of the game.

The Hawks looked to rally one last time as freshman Bethany Wright (Northbridge, Mass.) reached first on an error. RBI singles by Alicia McCauley (N. Reading, Mass.), Boulrisse, and Mittel cut the lead to nine before Maria Darling (Ansonia, Conn.) was able to strikeout Julianna Vesce (Mahwah, N.J.), ending the game.

Both teams will play again on the 25th as the Hawks travel to Western New England and the Anchorwomen face off against Wheaton College.
