Softball sweeps Lions in CCC opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team preserved through rainy conditions to come away with a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Nazarene College Saturday afternoon, winning by scores of 9-3 and 11-1 (5).

Playing as the visitors due to venue changes, the Hawks began the first game with a 2-run inning. Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) launched a 2-run double to center field, bringing home Samantha Mittel (Palm Coast, Fla.) and Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.). Eastern Nazarene would grab both runs back in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from Sterling Marino (North Kingstown, R.I.) and Olivia Tovar (Coarsegold, Calif.).

Roger Williams would go back up in the top of the second, getting three runs in the inning on RBIs from Boulrisse, Mittel, and Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.). The Hawks added three more in the top of the fifth, beginning with an RBI single from Alicia McCauley (North Reading, Mass.). Boulrisse and Mittel followed later in the inning with RBIs of their own to give the Hawks an 8-2 lead.

Trailing 2-9 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Lions attempted to mount a late rally, with Sam Losano (Elverta, Calif.) bringing home Shelby Bass (Visalia, Calif.) with a one-out RBI single. However, the Hawks were able to earn the win with a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) picked up the win, tossing six innings and allowing two runs with six strikeouts. Mittel was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, while Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) finished 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.

Carissa Cicolini (Methuen, Mass.) took the loss, tagged for all nine runs in the game. Abigail Moore (Sheridan, Calif.) was 2-for-4, while Marino and Tavor each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

In the second game, the weather began to become uncooperative, as the rain began to move in. The wet conditions did not affect the Hawk offense as RWU stormed out for four runs in the top of the fifth. Meredith Moise (North Reading, Mass.) kicked off the rally with a 2-run triple, followed by an RBI double from Messier and an RBI single from Mittel.

RWU added two more in the fifth on Atkinson's 2-run, 2-out double. However, the big inning for RWU came in the fifth, when the Hawks plated five runners in the frame. RWU brought all nine batters to the plate in the inning to take a commanding 11-0 lead.

Eastern Nazarene's offense struggled for most of the game, set down in order over the first three innings and managing one hit over the first four. The Lions were finally able to break through on the scoreboard in the fifth, with Cayla Clinkscale (Winchendon, Mass.) scoring on a sac fly from Bass.

Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) put on a strong performance, allowing that one run in five innings. Mittel was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and an RBI, while Atkinson and Moise each were 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Moise added a pair of runs scored.

Tovar suffered the loss, giving up 11 runs (10 earned) in five innings. She, along with Clinkscale and Losano, each finished 1-for-2 at the plate.

Roger Williams (7-7, 2-0 CCC) will host the University of New England tomorrow at noon, while Eastern Nazarene (6-8, 2-2 CCC) hosts UMaine-Farmington on Tuesday.
