BRUNSWICK, Maine – A cold streak late in the game prevented the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team from picking up a victory in its first NCAA Tournament game in program history, as the Hawks fell 56-67 to Plattsburgh State University.
Tequilla Lloyd scored a game-high 18 points off the bench to lead Plattsburgh University in an NCAA Division III First Round Tournament game Friday evening on the campus of Bowdoin College.
The Cardinals improve to 23-5 and advance to Saturday's Second Round against the winner of Bowdoin and Castleton State at 7:00 p.m. in Morrell Gymnasium. Roger Williams ends one of its finest seasons with a record of 22-7.
Lloyd, who entered the game averaging 3.8 points per game, scored 12 of her 18 points in the second half to lead Plattsburgh to their first-ever NCAA Tournament win. Kathleen Payne scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Cardinals while Devona Paul pitched in 14 points.
Roger Williams was led by four players in double figures, including a team-high 16 points Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.). She was joined in double digits by Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) (12), Ari Renwick (Westwood, Mass.) (11) and Amanda Keane (Wilmington, Mass.) (10).
Trailing 34-30 at halftime, the Hawks rallied to take the lead on a pair of free throws from Bovee with 9:17 remaining, 49-47. The teams battled back and forth until a 55-55 tie with 3:07 remaining in the game - the 11th tie score of the contest.
The Cardinals closed the game on a 12-1 run, getting a consecutive layups from Lloyd with under 1:30 to go that pushed the lead to 62-55. Plattsburgh hit five late free throws to seal the win.
Plattsburgh held a 39-33 edge in rebounding and finished at 45.5% shooting for the game. Roger Williams made 32.8% of their shots from the field.
