Softball begins year with split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team began the 2014 season with a split down in Florida, defeating Mitchell College 5-1 before falling 1-7 to Simpson College.

Against Mitchell, the Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, getting RBI singles from Samantha Mittel (Palm Coast, Fla.) and Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.). Mittel added another RBI hit in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) picked up the win for the Hawks, allowing one unearned run in six innings with eight strikeouts.

Mittel finish with two hits and three RBI, while Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) and Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) were each 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Against Simpson College, the Hawks struggled on defense, as four errors in the game led to four unearned runs. Simpson scored at least one run in each of the first four innings, taking a 6-1 lead into the fifth inning.

Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) was tagged for four runs in three innings pitched in the loss. Mittel finished 1-for-3 with one RBI, while Messier was also 1-for-3 with the lone run scored.
