Softball garners CCC split with UNE

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team its first day of back-to-back-to-back doubleheaders with a split against the University of New England, winning 5-2 before a six-inning 4-12 loss.

In the opener, the Hawks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, with Samantha Mittel (Palm Coast, Fla.) bringing in Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) on an RBI single. Mittel later scored on a misplayed ball at third after a stolen base.

In the following inning, the Nor'Easters appeared to get on the board with a two-out RBI single from Allie Frazier (Tewksbury, Mass.), but an inaccurate lineup card was brought to the attention of the umpires, negating the run and ending the inning.

It would not be until the top of the third before UNE was able to score. The Nor'Easters got RBIs from Adrienne Chase (Holden, Mass.) and Abby Lambert (Brockton, Mass.) to make it a 2-2 game.

The score remained tied for the following three innings until the bottom of the sixth. Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) hit a hard line drive up the middle that bounced off of the Lambert in the circle and made its way to right field, scoring Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) and Alexandra Curioso (Pawcatuck, Conn.). Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine) later scored on an infield hit by Alicia McCauley (North Reading, Mass.)

The three-run lead was enough for the Hawks to hold on to. Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) retired the side in the seventh for her fifth win. Alicea finished 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Lambert gave up five runs (three earned) in the loss for UNE. Kelly Murphy (Cromwel, Conn.) was 2-for-3 for UNE.

The Hawks stormed out to a three-run lead in the opening inning in the second game. Messier scored on a RBI single from Mittel, followed by Atkinson's two-run blast to left. However, the Nor'Easters came right back with five runs in the second, capped off by a two-run homer to left center by Amanda Vaudreuil (Windham, N.H.)

UNE tacked on two more in the third, one of which came on an overturned call at home, denying RWU of an inning-ending double play.

The Hawks added one in the fourth on Tori Milano's (Eastchester, N.Y.) RBI single, but UNE notched five more runs in the sixth for an eight-run lead. RWU left one runner on in the bottom of the sixth as the Nor'Easters came away with the shortened win.Katelyn Austin (Bethlehem, N.H.) allowed four runs in 3.2 innings in the win, while Lauren Doneski (Waltham, Mass.) earned the save, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings. Vaudreuil and Chase each finished 3-for-4 with Vaudreuil adding three RBI and two runs, and Chase three runs and one RBI.

Milano gave up ten runs (eight earned) in 5.1 innings in the loss, but was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Atkinson and Mittel each were 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Tomorrow, Roger Williams (8-8, 3-1 CCC) hosts Western New England University while UNE (10-8, 4-2 CCC) hosts Bates.
