Softball notches sweep over Gordon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team won both games in their afternoon doubleheader against Gordon College. The first game came down to the wire with the Hawks edging the Fighting Scots out 2-1 in the bottom of the seven. Roger Williams took the second game 9-1 in six innings.

In the opener, Gordon scored their first and only run of the game in the top of the first when an error in the field sent Rachel Ryder (Telford, Pa.) home after she lead the inning off with a single.

The Hawks wouldn't tie the game until the bottom of the third with two outs in the inning. Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) singled to short center, bringing Samantha Mittel (Palm Coast, Fla.) to the plate. Mittel would double to center for the RBI before a ground out ended the inning.

Gordon looked to strike again in the top of the fifth when two batters reached base and advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch. However, pitcher Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) forced the next batter into a ground out, leaving two runners stranded and no further runs for the Fighting Scots.

The Hawks were strong in final inning of play, which ultimately won them the game. Julianna Vesce (Mahwah, N.J.) led the inning off with a deep single to center and a Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) sacrifice bunt would advance the runner to second.

With one out and a runner in scoring position, Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) stepped up to the plate and singled just deep enough to center to bring the runner home and give the Hawks the 2-1 victory.

Maliga picked up the win for Roger Williams, pitching all seven innings allowing only five hits and no earned runs.

Boulrisse and Alicea both recorded two hits in the game, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 respectively. Alicea's one RBI proved to be the deciding factor. Mittel also recorded one RBI.

Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.) gets the loss for the Fighting Scots, recording one strike out and allowing two earned runs. Ryder was a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate for Gordon.

The second game started in similar fashion with Gordon capitalizing on a few solid at-bats. Ryder led the inning off with a walk and was advanced to second on a Kendall Bukuras (North Falmouth, Mass.) sacrifice bunt.

Bareford would reach base on an infield error, which also allowed Ryder to reach home.

Fighting Scots were able to load the bases with just one out in the inning, but Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) forced a pop out and struck out the next batter to get her team out of a jam.

The Hawks tied the game in their first offensive appearance after Boulrisse reached base on an infield error. Burns was able to move the runner into scoring position on a ground out to second, which brought Mittel to the plate where she recorded another RBI as she singled to short right.

Milano was fierce from the circle for the rest of the game, allowing only two more hits and no further runs.

The Hawks went on a tear in the bottom of the second after Alicia McCauley (N. Reading, Mass.) singled to left. Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, R.I.) would walk to put two runners on base before Molly Petrone (Northborough, Mass.) got hit by a pitch and loaded the bases.

Boulrisse stepped up to the plate with a down the right field line. A pair of errors in right ended up clearing the bases and gave the Hawks the 4-1 advantage.

Burns would also double in the inning to bring Boulrisse home and put the Hawks up by four before Mittel singled to center for the final run of the inning and the 6-1 lead.

The Fighting Scots continued to struggle against Milano and were victim to a few 1-2-3 innings before the Hawks struck again in the bottom of the fifth.

Mittel led the inning with a triple to right field, which allowed Meredith Moise (N. Reading, Mass.) to step up to the plate and record an RBI single of her own to give the Hawks the 7-1 lead.

McCauley would reach base on an infield error and a sacrifice fly for Grosso put one more on the board before the inning ended with an 8-1 Hawk advantage.

Vesce was the determining factor in the final inning of play after an RBI single Roger Williams the advantage they needed to end the game early with a 9-1 victory.

Milano recorded the win for the Hawks pitching all six innings with two strikeouts and just one earned run.

Mittel went a solid 4-for-4 from the plate with two RBIs, while Boulrisse and McCauley each recorded two hits as well.

Bareford was given the loss for the Fighting Scots allowing 13 hits and seven earned runs.

Bukuras, Kara Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J.), and Gabriel Roberts (Chocorua, N.H.) had the only three hits of the game for Gordon.

Roger Williams (16-10, 9-3 CCC) travels to Nichols College tomorrow, while Gordon (7-17, 4-10) goes to Fisher on Tuesday.
