Offense comes alive for Softball in sweep of Nichols

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DUDLEY, Mass. –  Nichols College dropped a pair of games to the Roger Williams University Softball team Sunday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action. The Hawks won game one, 10-1, and game two, 16-10.

Sophomore Haley Fountain (Warren, Mass.) and freshman Christina Barrows (Carver, Mass.) each went yard for Nichols. Sophomore Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in game one while junior Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine) was 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored in the nightcap as the Hawks moved to 18-10 (11-3 CCC) with the sweep.

Game one remained scoreless until the third when the Hawks scored a pair of unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead. Roger Williams tacked on singles runs in the fourth and fifth on passed ball and a round tripper from freshman Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, N.J.), then struck for two in the sixth and fourth in the seventh to blow the game open. Freshman Meredith Moise (North Reading, Mass.) laced a two-run single in the sixth before Burns' three-run blast in the seventh. Junior Rachel Dalrymple (Belvidere, N.J.) grounded out to first in the sixth inning to plate freshman Christina Drake (Lebanon, N.H.) with the only Nichols run.

Sophomore Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) scattered eight hits over seven innings to earn her 10th win of the season for the Hawks. Fountain, meanwhile, was tagged for 10 runs (eight earned) in the loss.

Burns finished game two 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored while junior Caroline Atkinson (Milford, Mass.) was 4-for-6 with two RBI and four runs scored. Barrows, meanwhile, was 2-for-3 with her first collegiate home run while Fountain's grand slam in the bottom of the seventh was her first of the season.

Sears took the loss for Nichols as she surrendered five hits and seven runs (three earned) in 1.2 IP. Sophomore Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) moved to 7-6 with the win as she worked five innings of six-hit ball.

Nichols (9-15, 4-8 CCC) hosts Western New England for a pair Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Hawks play two at in-state rival Johnson and Wales Tuesday beginning at 3 p.m.
