Softball splits with Western New England

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team was able to walk away with one win in its doubleheader against Western New England on Wednesday. The Golden Bears took the first game with a 6-1 win, while the Hawks were able to take the victory 10-0 (5 inn.) in the second game.

The Golden Bears were the first to get on the board after a successful top of the first. Maria Francese (Hinsdale, Mass.) singled to left, bringing Lauren Zambrano (Wallingford, Conn.) to the plate where she would hit a ground rule double to put runners on second and third. A sacrifice fly by Alexis Bukowski (Wallingford, Conn.) brought Francese, home giving the Golden Bears the 1-0 advantage before an inning ending strike out.

After a few successful innings in the circle for Zambrano, she again capitalized from the plate with a two run homer in the top of the third to put her team up 3-0.

A lead-off walk by Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) in the bottom of the third looked promising for the Hawks, but a double play and strike out for Zambrano ended the inning, stranding a runner.

Western New England would score again in the top of the fourth after a pair of doubles for Gabby Lavinio (Dalton, Mass.) and Jocelyn Agnelli (Winchendon, Mass.). Zambrano got the RBIs again, doubling to center to bring her teammates home.

She continued to be strong from the circle, and a 1-2-3 inning left the Hawks scoreless again.

The Hawks would score their only run in the bottom of the fifth when Alicea doubled to left and an error on a Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) fly ball brought Alicea home.

The final run of the game was scored by the Golden Bears in the top of the seventh after they were able to load the bases and Lavinio singled to center to bring their sixth run home.

Zambrano got the win for the Golden Bears, pitching all seven innings allowing only two hits and one earned run with eight strikeouts. She also helped herself on offense going 3-for-4 from the plate with 4 RBIs. Francese and Lavinio also played well for Western New England each hitting 3-for-4 from the plate.

Maliga suffered the loss, allowing five runs in six innings of work. Alicea and Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) notched the lone two hits for the Hawks in the game.

The second game the Hawks took off in their first offensive appearance and never looked back, jumping out to an early 9-0 lead in the first.

A walk for Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) and a Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) sacrifice bunt moved the runner into scoring position as Samantha Mittel (Palm Coast, Fla.) came to plate to hit a long double to left putting two runners in scoring position.

Burns would also double in her first appearance at the plate, sending both runners home and giving the Hawks the 2-0 lead with one out. She would eventually be tagged out after getting stuck in a pickle during Alicea's at-bat, but the Hawks continued to be hot from the plate with two outs in the inning.

An error on the field allowed Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, R.I.) to reach first before Meredith Moise (N. Reading, Mass.) would walk to load the bases.
An RBI single for Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) brought home two more runs, and an error on the throw to first for Caitlin Downes' (Southington, Conn.) at-bat scored another run.

With a 5-0 lead and two outs in the inning, the Hawks continued to use their momentum to their advantage. Messier hit another RBI single before Western New England brought in Samantha DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) in a pitching change.

Another infield single for Boulrisse scored the seventh run of the inning for the Hawks, bringing Mittel up for the second time in the inning where she would hit an RBI double to give Roger Williams their final two runs of the inning.

The Golden Bears looked like they would rally in the top of the fifth after Francese and Kacey Dory (Plymouth, Mass.) reached base with two outs bringing Zambrano to the plate, but Milano was able to force a pop out ending the game.

Milano was strong from the mound for the Hawks allowing only four hits with no earned runs in five innings of play. She also went two for three from the plate with two RBIs to help seal the win.

Eight different players recorded hits for the Hawks in their win.

Messier and Boulrisse each went 1-for-2 with one RBI each, while Mittel and Burns went 2-for-3 and 1-for-3 respectively, each recording two RBIs.

Zambrano did well from the plate for the Golden Bears again as she went 1-for-3 while Dory and Tara Cabral (Kingston, Mass.) each went 1-for-1.

Tomorrow, Roger Williams (9-9, 4-2 CCC) hosts UMass-Dartmouth, while Western New England (4-8, 1-1 CCC) goes to Westfield State.
