Softball drops first game in CCC Tournament

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball fell in its first game in the double elimination portion of the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament, beaten by Curry College 5-2 Tuesday afternoon.

Megan Flaherty scored the first run of the game for Curry in the bottom of the first. She reached on an infield single, then moved over to second on a sacrifice. A wide throw to first on a grounder to second allowed Melissa Bruno to reach first and Flaherty to give Curry a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks would manage to tie the game in the third. Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) hit a one-out double to center field, then was scored on an RBI single by Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.). The Hawks managed to take the lead in the fifth on an RBI Double by Messier, driving a ball to deep right center to bring home pinch runner Bethany Wright.

RWU's lead would not last long as the Colonels took the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth. Allie Carver came through with the crucial hit, two-run homer to left center to make it 3-2 Colonels.

Curry added two more insurance runs in the sixth inning, getting an RBI single from Bruno and Amy Nolan scoring on a two-out error at third.

A potential RWU rally in the top of the seventh was halted on a game-ending double play off of a hard liner to third base in which the Hawks were doubled up at first.

Taylor Ahearn allowed two runs in seven innings and struck out six in the win. Flaherty went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs, while Bruno and Carver each went 2-for-4 with a run.

Meghan Maliga gave up three runs (two earned) in five innings of work in the loss. Messier finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Alicea was 3-for-3 with an RBI.

On Thursday, Roger Williams (20-16) will face Western New England at Gordon College, while Curry takes on the University of New England after falling 10-0 to Salve Regina earlier today.
