Softball takes two from UMass-Dartmouth

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University took both games of a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, winning 2-0 before a thrilling 6-5 nine-inning win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) put the Hawks up 1-0 in the bottom of the first, coming in from third on a wild pitch. The Hawks would later add one more in the second when Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine) took advantage of an overthrown ball from third to score from second.

Those two runs would be all that Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) needed, as she only allowed four hits over her seven innings of work. Corsair starter Marissa Spinuzzi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) only gave up two runs (one earned) in her outing, but suffered from lack of control as she gave up nine walks.

In the second game, the Corsairs grabbed two in the top of the first, with Ally Santerre (Swansea, Mass.) coming in on a double steal and Bre Marcyoniak (Westfield, Mass.) scoring on Chelsea Correia's (Bridgewater, Mass.).

The Hawks got one of the runs back in the third on an RBI single from Meredith Moise (North Reading, Mass.). The game-tying run came in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh, as Burns smacked a two-out, two-strike single past the shortstop to bring home Molly Petrone (Scarborough, Maine).

UMass-Dartmouth scored two runs in the top of the eight on two close calls. Correira just beat out a force play at home with the bases loaded for the go-ahead run. Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, Mass.) came in from third on the next at-bat on a sac fly from Shannon Droney (Franklin, Mass.). Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) fired the ball home on line, but Pontes slid around Mikaela Grosso's (West Warwick, R.I.) tag for a Corsair insurance run.

The Hawks extended the game with two more in the bottom of the inning, Alicia McCauley (North Reading, Mass.) came in on an RBI groundout from Maliga. Moise later scored on a pinch-hit two-out single from Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) to keep the game alive.

In the ninth, Rachel Carey (Holbrook, Mass.) regained the lead for UMD, scoring on a suicide squeeze by Marcyoniak. However, the Hawks persevered in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded, Burns hit a grounder to short. The throw home was offline and allowed Petrone and Messier to score the tying and winning runs for RWU.

Maliga picked up the win in relief of Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) who went 7+ innings allowing four runs (two earned). Moise, Petrone, and Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) all picked up two base hits in the game.

Shannon Orton (Swansea, Mass.) went the distance, giving up six runs (two earned) in the loss with eight Ks. Santerre and Pontes each finished 3-for-5 with a run scored.

On Saturday, Roger Williams (11-9) will play its first official road game of the year Saturday at Wentworth, while UMass-Dartmouth (4-10) hosts UMass-Boston
