Softball bows out of CCC Tourney with loss to Western New England

Box Score WENHAM, Mass. – The #6 Roger Williams University Softball team had its bid for a CCC title defense come to an end Friday afternoon, as #5 Western New England University eliminated the Hawks with a five-inning 8-0 win.

Golden Bear pitcher Heidi Greiger (Hyde Park, N.Y.) hurled five innings in the shutout victory improving to 10-7 on the season. The sophomore allowed just four hits on 19 batters faced. Her counterpart, sophomore Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) fell to 7-8 on the season while pitching just over three innings before being relieved from sophomore Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.).

Western New England brought their bats in game one, scoring in four different innings, while blasting four in the fifth and final inning. Freshman Gabby Lavinio (Dalton, Mass.) and senior Marissa Francese (Hinsdale, Mass.) led the way with two ribbies each including a homerun by Lavinio in the first inning and four hits by Francese.

Working on the defensive end shortstop, Lavinio posted four putouts while first baseman, sophomore Heather Fecteau (Biddeford, Maine) led with six.

Roger Williams managed only four hits in the game, coming from Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.), Samantha Mittel (Palm Coast, Fla.), Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, N.J.), and Meredith Moise (North Reading, Mass.).

The Golden Bears scored one run in the first and second innings before adding two more in the fourth for a 4-0 lead. Western New England went on to plate four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the shortened win.

Western New England (22-17) will face off against #2 Salve Regina tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. for a chance to play Endicott in the championship game. Roger Williams falls to 20-17.
