Women’s Soccer battles MIT to tie

Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second year in a row, MIT and the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team concluded their match in 1-1 tie on Tuesday afternoon at Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium.

MIT junior Morgan Moroi (New Albany, Ohio) netted her initial goal of the season at 3:29 following a pass from senior Ashley Peter (Manhasset, N.Y.) before Roger Williams countered with a strike by junior Haley Carignan (Scarborough, Maine) roughly six minutes later.

Roger Williams, currently ranked 10th in New England in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America regional poll, outshot MIT, 11-10, and held an advantage in corners, three to one. MIT junior goalkeeper Lauren Ullmann (Princeton, N.J.) turned away four shots, including an attempt at 99:25 in the first overtime period by junior Jessica Valenti (North Reading, Mass.). Freshman Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) deflected four shots and received some help from her defense, which blocked two attempts.

Moroi put the Engineers on the board first following a pass from Peter, who slid the ball through two defenders outside the Roger Williams box. Moroi collected her teammate's pass and fired her only shot of the contest into the back of the Hawks' net. Roger Williams responded at 9:44 as Carignan registered her second tally of the season following a pass from senior Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) in the box.

Roger Williams tried to push ahead with six second half shots that were denied by Ullmann and Tech's defense. Senior Ambika Krishnamachar (Darrien, Conn.) recorded two of her three shots in the second half, while sophomore Anna Zukowski (Ridgefield, Conn.) saw her only attempt sail over her opponent's goal at 48:15.

In overtime, Roger Williams attempted to net the game-winner off a corner kick at 92:41 by sophomore Kristen Casey (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) that sailed out of the box. MIT's lone chance came at 104:00 in the second overtime as senior Elena Gianotas (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) fired a shot that was blocked by freshman Paige Byrne (Clifton Park, N.Y.).
