Women’s Soccer grounds Bison

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team rolled off its eighth straight win Wednesday afternoon with a 7-1 win over Nichols College.

Roger Williams kept the pressure on the Bison defense in the early part of the game, though the Hawks were called for whistled for offsides three times in the first ten minutes of play.

However, the Hawks' perseverance paid off in the 13th minute, when the team put its first tally on the board. Carly Quinn (Danielson, Conn.) passed the ball to Haley Carignan (Scarborough, Maine) down the left sideline. Carignan then made a crossing pass to Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.), who kicked in her sixth goal of the season.

Kaiser would waste little time getting another goal for RWU, scoring less than a minute later. Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) tapped a short pass to her right to Kristen Casey (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who launched a shot of her own towards the right corner of the net. Bison keeper Kelly English (Mansfield, Mass.) made a diving stop on the ball, but pushed the ball to her right, leaving the left side of the net open for Kaiser, who took advantage and scored the loose ball.

Kaiser then completed the hat trick in the 32nd minute. Jenny Nasser (Beverly, Mass.) sent a pass up the right side to Kaiser, who made her way into the box uncontested. She made a small move around English and scored her third of the game on the open net.

The Hawks continued to add more goals in the second half, beginning with Jenna Hart (Cheshire, Conn.) logging a score in the 51st minute. Hart took a long pass from Nasser and fired a shot to the middle of the net to make it 4-0 Hawks.

Carignan scored for RWU in the 58th minute, taking a chip pass from Paige Byrne (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and burying a shot for her sixth goal of the year. Two minutes later, Nasser connected with Hart again for the second time of the game for a 6-0 Hawk lead.

Kaiser picked up her fourth goal of the game, taking a long through pass from Missy Andrade (Glastonbury, Conn.) in the 78th minute and outrunning the defense for a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper. Kaiser chipped a short shot to the right to make it 7-0.

Nichols managed to end the Hawks' shutout bid one minute later, with Meghan Dunn (Dudley, Mass.) taking the ball down on a breakaway at putting a shot into the upper left corner of the net. However, that would be the final tally of the game for either side.

Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) picked up the win for RWU, while Alexis Wright (Bennington, Vt.) played the final 49:29. English made a season-high 16 saves for the Bison.

"We could not be happier with tonights performance and result," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "We have found our goal scoring boots once again and we hope it will continue for as long as this journey will allow us, Kansas City is our destination of choice. It was always a matter of time before we would light it up and go on a scoring spree. These last 3 games have shown the rest of the conference we mean business and we want to finish the season as strong as we started back on September 1st away at Lasell College. The game tonight against Nichols could have been tricky and we dealt with it very well. The first 5 or 10 minutes was a little sloppy but then we found feet, our way and then it was very much one direction for the rest of the night. Scoring goals, 17 to 1 in 3 games is always a good sign for things to come. We feel we can score at will some times when we are in the zone."

"It has been a very good day all round! We were able to rest 2 players who are coming back from injury. We were able to play every outfield player tonight and it did not effect our style of play. We pride ourselves on our aggressive high tempo attacking soccer. We try to take it too the opposition and press when we do not have the ball. We are still growing, learning and introducing new team concepts at practice as well as in our competitive games. It seems to be helping and we have more options than we did at the start of preseason, our bench has grown, we are a team with more depth!"

"We have players who could play at the next level if they want to challenge themselves, but for now we want them focused on being the best they can be for the Hawks…3 points keeps us on top of the conference and with 1 less game to play. We had 1 player have surgery this past week and we hope another player will make it back from a bad injury by the time the playoffs come around! We want as many players available for selection come playoff time as we can."

"Before we kicked off against Nichols the NCAA released its first rankings for the region and it was great to see were ranked 4th in New England. We believe that is a fair reflection on our team, performance and results so far this season. We proved last fall we can compete on the National level playing 3 games in the NCAA National Tournament. We gained a lot of experience from last fall and we believe we are stronger and wiser this season, our defensive record proves that and now that we are scoring goals and players are getting hot in front of the net we are excited for the next game on Saturday! This is a great opportunity to impress our Alumni when they return to campus, it should be a full house for Senior Day as well…Ring the bell."

Roger Williams (14-0-3, 6-0-1 CCC) will host Gordon College Saturday in its final home game of the regular season, while Nichols (2-12-1, 0-7-0 CCC) heads to Western New England on Saturday.
