Women's Soccer shuts out UNE in regular season finale

Box Score BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer came away with a 3-0 shutout of the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match played Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 28) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) scored a pair of first-half goals to help Roger Williams University build a three-goal lead, as the Hawks secured the top seed for the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship.

The Hawks (16-0-3, 8-0-1 CCC) will play No. 8 Eastern Nazarene College in a quarterfinal-round match Saturday at 11 a.m. UNE (11-6-0, 6-3-0) will host No. 6 Gordon College that same day at noon.

Roger Williams scored back-to-back goals 1:13 apart in the latter stages of the first half to grab control of the match. Kaiser converted a penalty kick in the 33rd minute after the Nor'easters were whistled for a foul in the box. The Hawks then made it 2-0 shortly after, scoring on a corner kick. Kristen Casey (East Longmeadow, Mass.) sent the ball in from the right side, and Haley Carignan (Scarborough, Maine) headed it just over the goal line after a scramble in front.

The Hawks would add one more tally before intermission when Kaiser received a through-ball from Carignan, took one touch, and slid a left-footed shot inside the right post for her team-leading 13th goal of the season.

Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) had seven saves to register her eighth shutout. She made a nice stop of a point-blank offering by UNE's Anna Michaud (Hampden, Maine) in the 13th minute, and came off her line to make a sliding stop of a shot from Jackie Dickerson (Windham, N.H.) in the 81st minute.

Brielle Robinson (Monson, Mass.) was credited with seven saves for UNE.

"Going into the game tonight it was win or bust, a draw would not help us, "said Head Coach Tim Moody. "We wanted to be the number 1 seed and finish the season off strong, Wentworth had won the day before, they did what they had to do and moved into first place. So we had to have the same result and match them. Knowing we had to win and being able to control our own destiny was important. We had to go out and attack and throw caution to the wind and that is exactly what we did. The crowd was inspirational again, our Hawk Maine-ers were out in full voice. It was almost like having a home game. They were awesome!"

"Tonight against UNE we just left off from what we had been doing in the last 4 or 5 games. We got into the final third early on and started to rack up the corners. We didn't capitalize on them but we showed we were in the right frame of mind. However, we could have gone 1 behind when we fell asleep during UNE's corner. Luckily Sydney was awake and made a world class point blank save when it looked like we were going to have to play from 1 goal down. She changed the outcome of the game. We went up the other end, Mariah picked up the ball beat a few defenders and then got taken out in the box. A clear cut penalty, she picked the ball up and never looked back, she smashed it into the back of the net, 1 nil. Within a few minutes it was 2 nil. From a Kristen Casey corner, Haley got to it first and headed it into the far post, it crossed the line and we were on our way. Just before halftime the third goal sealed the deal. We just shut up shop and did a professional job to close out the half."

"Our strength comes from our possession and defense, we can keep clean sheets, we hold onto the ball very well but also can switch it up if needed. We made a few adjustments going into the game and also during the game, but the performance was still top draw. The players all want to start, to play and do their part for the team. We are better than last season for the main reason we have more depth and have more flexibility on how we can play. Sam picked up an  injury early on and we put Missy on in her place and it was as if nothing had changed. In the last 20 we made a few changes to put fresh legs on and we were able to continue to play at 100%. The substitutes understood their role and did what was asked of them. We restricted UNE to long range shots and Sydney was never in trouble again or nor were we, we showed we are a team on a mission."

"Winning at UNE was a great feeling, going on a road trip 3 hours in both direction is much more fun when you win, rather than losing. The bus ride home was full of happy people, fed and watered, enjoying halloween movies…getting excited for our traditional 5th annual Halloween Practice. Nothing makes the team happier than this time of the year…It is always a big talking point for current players and alumnae, it should be fun on Friday."

This will be the second consecutive season the Nor'easters have hosted Gordon in the opening round of the CCC Championship. The two teams met once this regular season, with the Fighting Scots earning a 2-1 overtime home win Oct. 21.
