Women’s Soccer notches 1st 20-win season with NCAA Tourney victory

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. – A late goal by the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team secured a 2-1 win for the Hawks over Misericordia in an NCAA Tournament First Round game played on Cozzens Field in Geneva, N.Y.
 
Roger Williams' Kristen Knight (Marion, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute to punch the Hawks' ticket to the second round. The win for Roger Williams also sets a new single-season mark, besting the previous record of 19 held by the 2008 and 2014 teams.
 
Roger Williams improves to 20-0-3 and will face No. 3 William Smith (17-1-1) in the second round tomorrow, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. on Cozzens Field. The Herons topped Penn State Berks 3-0 on Cozzens Field in their first round match this morning. The Cougars finished their season with a 15-4-2 overall record.
 
Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.) came off the bench for the Hawks and scored the first goal of the game, her second of the season in the 39th minute. Her header goal from right in front came after a cross from Samantha Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) from the right side of the field.
 
In the 73rd minute, Emily Szeflinksi tied the game up for Misericordia. Her second goal of the year came off an assist from Rebecca Robins. In a flurry of action in front of the goal, Szeflinski was able to finish on a shot from right out in front.
 
With 9:07 left in the game, Knight scored what proved to be the game winner. The Hawks earned a corner that was sent into the box by Kristen Casey. The ball went right to Jordyn Labriola (Hopkinton, Mass.), who tipped it to Knight, who sent her shot into the back of the net. It was her first goal of the season.
 
Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine0 played all 90 minutes in goal for the Hawks and made seven saves. Maureen Ciccosanti played the entire match in goal for the Cougars and stopped seven shots. Roger Williams finished with a slight 18-14 advantage in shots and a 7-5 lead in corners.
