Softball downs Fitchburg State 3-0

Box Score CLERMONT, FLA. - The Roger Williams University Softball team downs Fitchburg State to cap off their Florida spring break trip. The Hawks improve to 4-5 while the Falcons drop to 3-4.

The Hawks got off to a quick start in the first inning. Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) bunted her way on to first to lead the Hawks off. Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) put Messier in scoring position with sacrifice.
Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, N.J.) scored Messier with a single and advanced into scoring position on the throw to the plate. Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine) followed with a double that scored Vesce and put the Hawks up by two runs. The remained 2-0 until the top of the fourth inning.

Peoples would start the next scoring rally with a flyball to right field. Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, R.I.) would advance Peoples with a sacrifice and Sigita Ivaska earned a base on balls to put runners on first and second. Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) scored Peoples on a Falcon error that put the gave the Hawks a 3-0 advantage.

Maliga would go the distance for the Hawks hurling 71 pitches with 48 strikes to earn the win and the shut out.

The Hawks tenatively return to action on March 18 at 3pm in New London, Conn. to take on the Coast Guard Academy if the weather and field conditions permit.
