Softball splits on Day Four of their Florida Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, FLA. - The Roger Williams University Softball team split two extra inning games on day four of their Florida Spring Break Trip.  The Hawks are now 3-5 overall while Juniata Eagles slides to 3-2 and St. Mary's (Ind.) Belles improves to 7-1.

The Hawks produced the first score in their game with the Eagles in the top of the second inning. It began with a one out double into left field by Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine).  Sigita Ivaska (Gibsonia, Pa.) advanced Peoples to third with a hard grounder to short and Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, N.J.) picked peoples up with a single to right. Meredith Moise (N. Reading, Mass.) advanced Vesce to scoring postion with a single to left field and Alicia McCauley (N. Reading, Mass.) drove  both of them home with line drive triple that gave the Hawks a three run advantage.

The Eagles put there first run on the board in the bottom half of the second inning when Brooke Walls (Mifflinburg, Pa.) single scored Kerigan Ammerman (Alexandria, Pa.) to put the score at 3-1. Juniata would add another run in the bottom of the third when Paige Dennison (East Berlin, Pa.) tripled to right to score Katie Schroeder (Kempton, Pa.) who had tripled before her.

The Hawks would answer in the fourth with a lead off triple to left by Peoples followed by a singled to left by Ivaska that gave the Hawksa 4-2 advantage.

The Eagles put on their rally caps in the fifth inning to score two runs to knot it up at 4-4.  Katie Schroeder(Kempton, Pa.) bunted for a single and then Dennison reached on an error that advanced Shroeder to third base.  Dennison would then seal second base to put two runners in scoring position. Alicia Regnault (Bridgewater, N.J.) singled to score Schroeder and advance Dennison to third.  Ammerman grounded out to the pitcher but scored Dennison in the process.

The Eagles took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth scoring Brooke Ridenour (Thurmont, MD) on error that would have got the Hawks out of the inning unscathed.

Entering the final inning need a run, the Hawks Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) led off with a single. Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) and Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, R.I.) would advance Messier to second and then third which allowed Peoples to bring her in on a single to left.  The Hawks then closed regulation with a three-up three-down inning to take to the eighth.  

In the top of the eighth Ivaska started at second and Moise was walked to put two aboard.  Messier singled to load the bases and Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, R.I.) drove two runs in with a single to center that put the game at 7-5.


The second game with the Belles would also go extra innings.  The Hawks took the early lead in the third when Messier bunted her way on and was scored on a couple of St. Mary micsues.  The Belles answered in the sixth to bring the game to one a piece and score remained through regulation.  
In the top of the eighth St. Mary's exploded for five runs while the Hawks could only muster up one that brought the score to 6-2.

The Hawks conclude their Florida Spring Break trip with Emerson and Fitchburg State at 9 and 11am on Thursday, March 12 on Field 4 and 2 in Clermont, Fla. NTC Softball Facility.
