Softball drops first two games of 2015

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Softball team fell in its first two games of the 2015 season. Susquehanna University earned a 3-0 win over the Hawks in the opener, while SUNY Potsdam collected a 9-3 victory in the nightcap.

The Hawks got their first taste of outdoor action after spending all of preseason indoors thanks to snowy conditions in Rhode Island.

In the opener, Roger Williams had difficulty getting into a rhythm offensively, as the team collected only four hits in the game. For Susquehanna, the Crusaders notched all three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting a pair of RBI base hits and notching the third run on a wild pitch.

Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) and Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) each went 1-for-3 for RWU, while Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) and Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, R.I.) were 1-for-2. Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in four innings with three strikeouts.

In the second game of the day, the Hawks fell behind early and were unable to get out of the hole. SUNY Potsdam scored twice in the first, once in the second, and three times in the three for a 6-0 lead after three. The Bears tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning before the Hawks were able to answer.

In the fifth, Mary Adametz (Higganum, Conn.) scored on an RBI single by Alicia McCauley (North Reading, Mass.). McCauley would later come around on a misplayed ball in left field on Messier's single. RWU added one more in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Angela Pasquariello, but that would be all RWU could muster.

Messier, Adametz, and Haley Ledbetter each finished with two hits in the game for RWU, with Adametz adding a pair of runs. Tori Milano (Eastchester, N.Y.) took the loss, giving up six runs (five earned) in three innings of work.

Roger Williams (0-2) will be back in action tomorrow against Mount Union and Elizabethtown.
