Softball Sweeps the Leopards

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team slams Wentworth.  The Hawks improve to 8-10 overall and 5-7 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference while the Leopards slide to 2-16 overall and 0-10 in the CCC.
 
RWU (16) – WIT (1)

The Hawks got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first inning.  Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) laid down a bunt to reach first.  She proceeded to steal second base while Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) worked the count.  Boulrisse pulled a line drive down the right field line for a single that brought  home Messier.  Delany Burns (Hudson, N.H.) kept the steak alive by punching a grounder to short stop and reaching a fielding error that scored  Boulrisse and put the Hawks up 2-0.  Meredith Moise (N. Reading, Mass.) was walked, advancing Burns to second base. Sigita Ivaska (Gibsonia, Pa.) was hit by a pitch that  loaded bases.   Mikaela Gorosso (West Warwick, R.I.) capitalized by  cranking one  deep to center field for a double that scored all base runners.   Alicia McCauley (N. Reading, Mass.) singled to right center  to pick up Gorosso and bring the game to 6-0. 

The Hawks bats stayed hot in the second inning. , Boulrisse lead off with a line drive to right center field for a double.  Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, R.I.) followed up with a walk.  With Burns at the plate the Hawks attempted a double steal that advanced Ledbetter but Boulrisse was thrown out at third.  Burns hit a line drive to short stop and reached on a fielding error that scored Ledbetter.  Moise hit a line drive to left field that advanced Burns to second base. Burns and Moise moved to second and third on a wild pitch before Ivaska walked to load the bases.    Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine) singled  and the Hawks cleared the bases on a couple of errors that bought the game to 10-0

The Hawks ended the contest in  the fifth after running the score to 16-1.

Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) pitched all five innings giving up two hits in the win while Sam Curran pitched two inning in the loss.

The Hawks continued their offensive onslaught in the begining of the second game. Taylor Messier (Cranston, RI) bunted for a base hit. She stole second before Chelsea Boulrisee (Bourne, MA) reached on an error that sent Messier home. Delaney Burns hit a two run, home run putting the hawks up 3-0. Haley Ledbetter reached first on an infield single and stole second on an error by the catcher. Meredith Moise (N. Reading, MA) was walked, putting runners on first and second. Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, CT) hit a RBI single up the middle, driving in Ledbetter for a 4-0 lead. Angela Pasquariello (N. Smithfield, RI) drew a walk that put Alicea in scoring position. Alicia McCauley (N. Reading, MA) ran out a fielder's choice that Moise tried to stretch to a run, but was thrown out at home. Taylor Messier hit a two RBI fly to short center, sending Pasquariello and Alicea home. The score was 6-0 Hawks at the end of the first.

The Leopards answered in the top of the third with 8 runs of their own. Anne Harris reached first on a fly ball to short right field. Megan Berryman reached on a fielder's choice. Sam Curran hit a double to left center field, putting runners on second and third. Liz Glavin hit a two run double off the wall, bring the game to 2-6. Vanessa Weymouth reached first on an error by the third basemen, and Glavin reached third. Karsyn Sawyer hit an RBI double in the right center gap, advancing Weymouth to third and scoring Glavin for the Leopards third run. Heather Pinkston reached on a walk, making the bases loaded bringing Haley Sabino to the plate. Sabino hit a 2 RBI double to the left center gap, bringing the game to 5-6 with runners at second and third. Anne Harris reached on a walk. With bases loaded, Berryman hit a two RBI double to right center field that gave the Leopards the first lead of the day at 7-6. Sam Curran hit an RBI single, driving in Harris putting Wentworth up by two to end the inning.

The Hawks came back in the bottom of the third. McCauley walked and then stole second while Messier was at bat. Messier hit a single to short center, putting McCauley in scoring position. Boulrisse lined out to first, then McCauley scored on a throwing error to bring the game to 7-8.

The Hawks took back control with 5 runs in the fourth inning. Ledbetter beat out the ground ball to second base for an infield single. Ledbetter stole second and third, putting herself in scoring position with Alicea at bat. Alicea hit an RBI single, tying the game at 8-8. Pasquariello reached on a walk, putting runners on first and second. McCauley reached first on a bunt down the third base line, making the bases loaded. Messier then hit a two RBI double to deep center, scoring Pasquariello and Alicea and putting the Hawks up 10-8. The Hawks scored two more runs on wild pitches and throwing errors that gave them a four-run cushion. 

The Hawks kept the Leopards scoreless for the remainder of the game while bringing in four more runs to bring the final score to 16-8. 

Moise picked up her first win of the season while Pinkston took the loss. 

The Hawks return to play tomorrow at Dudley, Mass. to take on the Colonels of Curry College at 12:00 p.m. while the Leopards tangle with Endicott on Monday, April 13 in Boston, Mass. at 3:00 p.m.
