#21 Wheaton Doubles Up on Hawks

BRISTOL, R.I. -  The Roger William University Softball team dropped a doubleheader to #21 Wheaton College.  The Lyons improve to  23-3 overall while the Hawks drop to 9-13.  

RWU (0) – Wheaton (18)

The Lyons came out firing on all cylinders.  Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I.) set the offensive tone for the day as the first batter singling up the left field line. Madeline Hatch (Acton, Mass.) smashed a line drive to left center, for a RBI double, driving home Hart. Kelly Welch (Wood Dale, Ill.) then hit a line drive to center field for a base hit, advancing Hatch to third. Caroline Fairbanks (Milford, Mass.) hit a line drive to the Hawks first basemen, who then tagged out Welch for a double play. Hatch then stole home on a wild pitch, bringing the score to 2-0.

The Lyons offense continued to produce in the top of the second.   Katelyn Andrade (Seekonk, Mass) hit a ball to deep right center for a double. Marissa Timoteo (Jupiter, Fla.) drove a ball to left center for an RBI double, making the score 3-0. Erin Deneen (Framingham, Mass.) grounded to third base and the Hawks elected to take out the lead runner.  Mary DeMoura drove a ball up the right field line for a double, putting both base runners in scoring position.  Hart bunted to fill the bases. Hatch flied out to right field, allowing Deneen to tag up and score. DeMoura advanced to third on the same play, then scored on a fielding error that put the game at 5-0.

The Lyons continued offensive onslaught in the top of the third.   Fairbanks drove a hard grounder to short left field for a base hit. Fairbanks stole second with Amanda Drury (Tolland, Conn.) at the plate. Drury hit a fly ball over the first basemen, resulting in an RBI double, advancing Fairbanks home. Andrade launched a ball into deep left field for another RBI double, allowing Drury to score. Timoteo hit a ball up the middle for a base hit, which brought home Andrade for the eighth run.

The Lyons kept the pressure on by scoring 10 runs in the top of fourth putting the game out of reach.
Emily Berardi (Boston, Mass.) picked up the win allowing three hits in five innings of work.  Meghan Maliga took the loss going all five innings in the effort.

RWU (1) - Wheaton (12)


The Lyons took the early lead with a first inning rally that began with Emma Hart (Lincoln, R.I.)  driving the ball up the middle for a base hit. Hart stole second base while Madeline Hatch (Acton, Mass.) was at the plate. Hatch hit to center field for a base hit, and on a throw to third base, advanced to second leaving both runners in scoring position. Kelly Welch (Wood Dale, Ill.) was walked to load the bases for Caroline Fairbanks (Milford, Mass.). Fairbanks hit a bullet up the left field line for an RBI single that brought home Hart. Emily Bouthillette (Lincoln, R.I.) hit a grounder to short stop that resulted in a double play allowing Hatch to score, bringing the game to 2-0 at the end of the first.

The Lyons boosted to 3-0 in the second inning. Erin Deneen (South Yarmouth, Mass.) hit a line drive to center for a double. Deneen advanced to third after a tag up on a caught foul ball, and came home on a wild pitch.

In the top of the fourth Mary DeMoura (Boston, Mass.) slammed a ball to deep right field for a double. Hart hit a line drive to left field for an RBI double that brought home DeMoura, bringing the score up to 4-0. Hatch lined to center for a single that put base runners on first and second. Both runners advanced one base on a dropped ball. Welch grounded to left field for a base hit that scored Hart and left runners at the corners. Fairbanks grounded out to the pitcher to advance Welch to second. Bouthilette hit a fly to short stop, and reached second on an error that allowed Hatch to score. Welch stole home on a wild pitch that brought the Lyons up 7-0.

The Hawks scored their only run of the day in the  fourth. Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) started off with a walk. Julianne Vesce (Mahwah, N.J.) was thrown out at first to advance Alicea to second. Sigita Ivaska (Gibsonia, Pa.) grounded to the short stop for a single that put Alicea in scoring position. Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) hit a line drive to short left field for an RBI single that brought the game to 7-1.

The Lyons put the game out of reach with five runs in the fifth which brought the game to a close at 12-1.

Noelle Christmas picked up the win and remained a perfect 5-0 on the season while Meredith Moise took the loss.
 
The Hawks return to action on April 18 to take on Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent, Gordon College in Wenham, Mass. at 12:00 p.m. while Wheaton takes on Smith on April 17 at 3:00 p.m. in Wellesley, Mass.
