Softball Advances in CCC Championship Tournament with Win over Gordon

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team advances into the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Tournament with 3-1 win over the Fighting Scots of Gordon.  The Hawks improve to 13-15 on the year while Gordon ends its season at 7-23.

Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) stepped in the circle for the Hawks and Emily Kline (Park Ridge, N.J.) took the ball for Gordon.
The Hawks jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) bunted for a single and advanced to second on a throwing error on the lead runner. Meredith Moise (N. Reading, Mass.) singles to the left side to score Boulrisse to put the Hawks up 1-0.

Gordon answered in the top of the second to tie the game.  Kline reached on a fielder's choice. Gabriel Roberts (Center Conway, N.H.) reached on error and Kline advanced to third on the throw. Alyssa Unumb (Bedford, Mass.) singled to left field to score Kline and even the game at 1-1.

The game remained knotted until the bottom of the third.  Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, R.I.) worked a walk and once aboard stole second to get in scoring position. Alana Peoples (Scarborough, Maine) singled to left to bring home Ledbetter and take a 2-1 advantage.

The Hawks added one more run for insurance in the bottom of the sixth. Moise reached on an error and proceeded to steal second during Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.) at bat. Alicea grounded to the short stop to advance Moise to third.  Maliga reached on an error that scored Moise and put the game at it final score of 3-1.

Maliga went the distance for the Hawks striking out seven in the win.  Kline also completed the game working six innings and striking out three to take the loss.

The Hawks advance into the double elimination phase of the CCC Championship Tournament to take on #4 seeded Curry in Springfield, Mass. at Western New England University on Monday, April 27 at 2:30 p.m.
