Softball drops first game of doubleheader to Endicott, rain takes second

Box Score 1 BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Softball team managed to play the first game of a doubleheader against Endicott College Friday afternoon before heavy rain halted the second game. The Gulls edged RWU 3-2 in eight innings in the opener.

In the opener, Endicott grabbed the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Danielle Stratton (Agawam, Mass.) led off the game with a single and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jamie Corda (Higganum, Conn.). After a fly-out to right, Stratton came home on Sam DiBella's (Shelton, Conn.) after a high throw to first.

The Gulls went on to add one more run in the third. The inning started off similar to the first, with Stratton leading off with a single before being bunted up to second by Corda. DiBella came up two batters later and brought Stratton home with a sacrifice fly to left, giving the Gulls a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks threatened in the fourth, putting runners at the corners with two outs, but Gull pitcher Courtney Blake (East Islip, N.Y.) managed to escape the inning with a strikeout. However, Blake would not be as lucky in the fifth, as the Hawks tagged her for a pair of runs in the inning.

Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) led off with a single past second and moved to second on a misplayed ball at short. Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) stepped up with runners at first and second with one out and sent a long single to right center to bring in Messier. Haley Ledbetter (Westerly, R.I.) followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, R.I.) and tie the game at two.

The 2-2 score held through the following two innings, sending the game to extras. In the eighth, Emily Hoffman (Malden, Mass.) came through with the game-winning hit, notching a two-out single to score Corda.

Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn,) allowed three runs (one earned) while striking out seven in the loss. Messier finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Ledbetter and Chelsea Boulrisse (Bourne, Mass.) each went 2-for-3.

Blake earned the win for Endicott. allowing two unearned runs over eight innings while striking out four. Stratton and McNeil each finished 2-for-4, with Stratton adding two runs scored.

THe second game saw the Hawks grab a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Boulrisse scored from third on a passed ball with two outs before the rain came in and ended the day for both teams.

Roger Williams (6-8, 3-2 CCC) will head to Western New England University tomorrow, while Endicott (8-7, 5-0 CCC) hosts Babson on Tuesday.
