Softball Bows Out of CCC Championship Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. - The Roger Williams University Softball team bows out of the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship with extra inning loss to Endicott.

Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) drew her second start of the day for the Hawks as did Courtney Blake (East Islip, N.Y.) for the Gulls.

Roger Williams got on the board first as junior Taylor Messier (Cranston, R.I.) crossed home plate off a single from sophomore Meredith Moise (North Reading, Mass.). The following inning the Hawks made it a 2-0 game after Messier tripled with a runner on second. In the top of the third Roger Williams again kicked the lead up to three off a single from junior Veronica Alicea (Trumbull, Conn.).

The Gulls would chip away at the lead and square it up in the bottom of the fifth. Margaret Martzolf (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) cranked a two-run homerun to get the Gulls back in the game in the fourth inning. The following inning Julia McNeill (Hauppauge, N.Y.) earned her first RBI of the game as she sent Chrissy Gikas (Danvers, Mass.) home for the game-tying run.

The game remained deadlocked into the ninth inning until Hawks produced one more run to take the lead again. Moise singled to left field. Delaney Burns (Hudson, N.H.) singled up the middle to advance Moise to second. Alicea out ran a fielder's choice that advanced Burns and pushed Moise to third. Bethany Wright (Northbridge, Mass.) singled to right field to score Moise to take a 4-3 lead.

The Gulls quickly responded scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the 5-4 extra innings victory.
