Women’s Soccer sails past Wentworth

Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Jenna Hart (Cheshire, Conn.) netted the game's only goal with just under 20 minutes remaining in regulation to lift the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team to a 1-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both squads.

With the win the Hawks, winners of three straight, improve to 4-0-1 (1-0) while the Leopards suffer their first setback of the season (4-1-0, 0-1). The game was a re-match of the 2014 CCC title game where the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie before Roger Williams took the crown on penalty kicks.

Neither team was able to get much going in the first half, as evidenced by a total of nine shots combined (four on net) with Wentworth freshman Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) and Roger Williams sophomore Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) each stopping both attempts.

The stalemate continued in the early stages of the second half with the Leopards putting the only shot on goal. The Hawks had a chance on a corner kick in the 70th minute, however the attempt was cleared out before a shot could be attempted.

Hart's marker came when sophomore Kasey Provost (Peabody, Mass.) sent in a cross from the left side. The balls was loose in front before Hart was able to get a foot on it and put a shot in the right side.

Wentworth had a corner kick late in the contest was but unable to convert and a last-second shot attempt to tie the game could go wide.

Martin made three saves to record her third shutout of the season while Robinson stopped four shots. Roger Williams had a 12-9 shot advantage while the Leopards held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

"It is always very important to start the season winning your first conference game," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "Wentworth are a very good team and play a similar style of soccer like we do and so we match up, and that makes it a challenge. I expect them to have another good season. I expect they will win a lot of games this year at home. It was great to get the win for us today, score the goal at the right time and keep the clean sheet. It can be a difficult place to come too and play soccer with regards to the field size and location, but we have been preparing all week to compensate for that. The hard work before hand has paid off as we were physically and mentally ready for this opponent."

"Todays win puts us at the top of the table on day one and that is where we plan to stay. It is always best to get to the top as soon as possible rather than having to chase another team. We want to be in control of our own destination on this journey to the playoffs. We want the home field advantage, to be able to play soccer in front of our own fans in our own soccer stadium that was built to host championships. We feel we can do great things this fall and that means a lot of hard work at practice to accomplish the goals we have set out for ourselves."

"We value players who have a positive attitude, who want to learn, to develop their soccer skills and get better over the course of the season. It is a long season and every player has to be available for selection when needed or called upon to play. Today we played slightly different than normal because the conditions dictated that take place while still trying to maintain our philosophy and style of play. It is important to be flexible in the way we set up for a match. This means we can use different players who strengths best suite the occasion. We have a very good squad of players on this team and during the season we will need everyone ready to step in when selected. We train players to get better, we develop their natural talents so that they can help the team when it is game time, and when it is time, we play to win!"

"Once again it was great to see so many parents, family members as well as Alumni at the game today on the road in Boston! The support we are getting at home and away is awesome, it shows how much people want to follow the team with the success we are having and I hope that continues. We hope we can entertain and continue to get the right results we want over the next couple of months. This has been a great start to the season and we hope the national ranking committees are watching as we feel we can compete with anyone in the country this season if everyone stays fit and healthy! Today we had 2 players out injured to start the game and we were still able to play effect, efficient attractive soccer."

"We are looking forward to two home games this week and play a very good MIT team on Tuesday. Then our conference home opener on Saturday against Eastern Nazarene when the women's programs pick up their 2014 CCC All-Sport Award from the CCC Commissioner. It is always nice to win something and get recognized for your efforts you put in all year round."

Wentworth is at Albertus Magnus on Wednesday while Roger Williams hosts MIT on Tuesday.
