Women's Soccer shuts out Saints

Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team posted a 2-0 victory over Emmanuel College Thursday evening in non-conference action at Roberto Clemente Field. With the win the Hawks, who were ranked fourth in the latest NSCAA regional poll, remain unbeaten at 6-0-2 overall while the loss drops the Saints to 3-7 midway through the 2015 campaign.

The squads battled to a 0-0 score through the first half as Roger Williams held a 6-2 advantage in shots, landing four on goals compared to just one on net by the Saints. Neither squad had a dangerous scoring chance in the half with Emmanuel attempting the only corner in the stanza.

RWU senior forward Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) broke the scoreless tie during the 47th minute of play with her third goal of the season to put the Hawks on top, 1-0. Following a failed Emmanuel clear, Kaiser pushed a ball past the last EC defender before beating junior goalkeeper Victoria LaRoche (Hudson, N.H.) with a shot to the far post for the goal.

Kaiser, a nemesis of the Saints, has now tallied a total of six goals against Emmanuel over the last two meetings.

The Hawks took a 2-0 lead behind an unassisted tally from freshman midfielder Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes (Los Angeles, Calif.) at the 66:43 marker. The score was her first collegiate marker and came with a strong right-footed strike from just inside the Saints 18-yard box.

Shortly after, Emmanuel had its best scoring chance of the game as junior midfielder Maggie Carey (Swampscott, Mass.) hit the crossbar with a blast from 25-yards out.

LaRoche finished the game with seven saves while Roger Williams sophomore keeper Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) earned her sixth victory of the year turning away two shots for the shutout.

"We were a joy to watch tonight in Boston," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "Playing at Emmanuel is a pretty unique setting and we lived up to that occasion. We played better than we have for a few games. The team have been working hard in practice and it payed off tonight in all areas of the pitch. We passed the ball with a purpose, we understood the game plan and executed it to a tee. There was no let down from start to finish."

"We created plenty of opportunities in the first half and although we didn't score I was never concerned and neither were the team. We showed plenty of quality on the pitch. You could tell we were going to get the win and that mentally we were focused. We defended from the front and attacked from the back. On nights like this I really enjoy coaching this team. To see them play the way they can. It is great for the fans to see what we do in practice every day. Our squad depth is growing as players get healthy and fitter. The best thing is there is still more to come from this team."

"Our experience can be seen with how we warm up, that we are mentally tuned and the chemistry the players have with each other. We can introduce players from the bench and our style doesn't change too much or at all. It was awesome to see freshmen starting and playing a big role so soon this fall. They have a great future ahead of them. We practice, play and win for today as there is no  tomorrow, however we also plan for the future. We continue to recruit quality players. Our 2016 recruiting class is looking very exciting. They will have big shoes to fill."

"The journey so far this fall has been all I expected it to be. We are undefeated and playing soccer that is to be admired by all. Hopefully more of the same will follow. Watch this space."

The Saints return to action on Saturday, September 24 when they head to Anna Maria College for a 3:00 PM Great Northeast Athletic Conference tilt while the Hawks play the same day, hosting Endicott College at 1:00 PM in CCC action.
