Women’s Soccer draws with Springfield

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – A late goal by Springfield College led to a 1-1 double overtime draw with the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team on Friday night at Brock Affleck Field.

With the tie, Springfield is now 8-1-1 in its last 10 season openers, and starts the season with a record of 0-1-1, while the Hawks pull to 1-0-1.

Roger Williams held a slight 9-8 shot advantage, while Springfield's sophomore goalkeeper Ciara Boucher (Manchester, Conn.) finished the game with a pair of saves, and Roger Williams sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) finished the contest with three stops of her own.

Roger Williams opened the scoring just 4:26 into the second half, when senior forward Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) crossed a ball from the right side of the field, which squeaked through the Springfield defense, only to find the foot of junior midfielder Jenna Hart (Cheshire, Conn.), who finished her chance into the left side of the net to give the Hawks a 1-0 edge.

Springfield pulled even with 20:12 remaining in the contest, when Nicole Fowler (Hudson, Mass.) dribbled past a Roger Williams defender, before regaining possesion of the ball and sneaking the ball past Martin and into the right side of the net to even the score at one goal apiece.

The Pride were on the verge of gaining a one-goal lead at the 11:34 mark of the second half, when sophomore forward Kimberly Quiles (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) blasted a shot from well outside the box that hit the crossbar, before freshman Amanda Wright (Pittsfield, Mass.) collected the rebound, and took a shot that hit the right post and ricocheted out of bounds.

"We were awesome tonight; we showed we can dominate a very good Springfield team," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "The first half we played like the team that made the sweet 16 last season. We proved to ourselves that we have what it takes to be taken seriously in the region if not the country. On this performance we played like the CCC Champions. It was amazing to watch and enjoy. The hard work of last spring and the training the players put in during the summer has paid off. The returning seniors want to achieve great things again this year and by this performance have made a statement to anybody watching. We created enough quality chances to have won the game out right, but we still remain undefeated with the draw. It was a very good test tonight which we passed. It was an enthralling contest for the neutral or soccer fan!"

"Individually and collectively the team understand the concept we have introduced over the last 5 years and the style of play it takes to be competitive at this level, giving the program a chance to win another conference championship and be recognized at the National Level. We are a joy to watch! We could not be more proud on the effort by all the players at practice, how that it is translated to the application and success of the team during game days. It is early in the season, but If we can keep this up all season our fans and friends of the program are going to enjoy what they see."

"The players understand why they play soccer at RWU. What we want to accomplish and the effort that is needed to make that happen. It was an outstanding game in all areas tonight, the way we defended as a group from the front, defending one on one to free flowing pass and move soccer all over the pitch. If we had taken a few more chances they would have been on Sports Center Top 10 moments…it was that good as well as fun to watch and be a part of tonight!"

Both sides played back-and-forth soccer throughout the remainder of regulation, as well as both overtime periods, before the game ended in a gridlock. Up next, Springfield will host Westfield State on Sunday at 3 p.m. back on Brock-Affleck Field.
