Women’s Soccer shuts out Westfield State

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team earned a shutout victory against Westfield State College Saturday evening at the Springfield College Invitational, returning home with a 2-0 win.

The Hawks finished the tournament 1-0-1 after a 1-1 tie against host Springfield College on Friday.

Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) scored the first goal of the game in the 30th minute for RWU, taking a through ball from Jessica Valenti (North Reading, Mass.) and putting in her second score of the season.

Haley Carignan (Scarborough, Maine) added another goal in the 68th minute, taking a cross from Kaiser for her first score of the year.

Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) needed only one save in the game to record the victory.

"We showed again today our intentions to compete and play attractive entertaining soccer," said Head Coach Tim Moody. "We are staying true to our soccer philosophy and how we intend to challenge teams. We moved the ball well as a group and created quality chances again to score multiple goals. Perhaps we need to be more clinical in front of goal and put teams away sooner. We feel we can score against any team we play this season. Westfield gave us a good game today. They will again be at the top of their conference. It was good to see several new players get on the pitch today and show what they are all about as well as a few returners who look like they have improved from last fall."

"Collectively we seem to be going in the right direction so far, even with it being early and only three games into the season. Our goals are coming from our attacking players who are getting into dangerous positions. Our wide players are putting in crosses that want to end up in the back of the net. The defense is setting the tone on how the game is going to go. They are making good interceptions, tackles and then linking up well with those players in midfield after they have won the ball."

"It has been two tough games this weekend so the rest tomorrow should do us good and what is needed at this time. We need to work on our recovery between games and practice, eat the correct foods, take on fluids that will help our bodies heal. It is important to go over our post match routine and follow up with our athletic training staff. This will allow us to be stronger at the end of the season when the play offs come around. All in all, we have to be very happy with the contribution of every member of the squad. It is a great day to be a Hawk."
