Women’s Basketball pulls away from Eastern Nazarene

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University held off a late rally by Eastern Nazarene College to come away with a 68-60 win over the Lions Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.
 
Katie Lowerre (Sharon, Mass.) started the game with a jumper for the Hawks in the opening minute, but the Lions immediately followed with a basket by senior Krystal Holl (Smithsburg, Md.). The game continued with back and forth baskets, while the Hawks held a small lead throughout. Elia Salazar (Los Angeles, Calif.) brought the gap to five, 11-6 with five to go in the quarter. Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) retaliated with a three pointer to bring the game to 14-6 with three minutes left. The game stalled the remaining three minutes; the Hawks holding an eight-point lead going into the second quarter, 14-6.
 
Rachel Battista (Johnston, R.I.) hit a three at 9:24 to quickly advance the Hawks lead in the second. Teammate Lowerre followed with a jumper at 8:53. Jaysa Cooper (Frisco, Texas) landed a layup for the Lions to bring the score to 19-8 at 8:35.
 
Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) landed a smooth layup to bring the game to 24-12 with seven minutes to go in the quarter. Celina Calderon (Lompoc, Calif.) reacted quickly and hit a three pointer at 6:54, raising Eastern Nazarene to 15, while the Hawks remained at 24. The Lions continued to land baskets as Holl and Jasmine Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif.) hit jumpers, 24-19 with three minutes to go. Jordan Grays (Elk Grove, Calif.) continued the streak and landed a rebound lay-up at 2:26 to bring the gap to a mere five, 26-21.
 
The Hawks didn't let up; Battista hit a jumper at 1:42, advancing their lead by seven, 28-21. Eastern Nazarene came back with a three-pointer by Calderon with 16 seconds left, ending the half at 30-24 in favor of the Hawks.
 
The Hawks continued to stay on top throughout the third quarter. maintaining a comfortable lead. Holl landed a three at 7:35 to bring the Lions behind five points, but Roger Williams persisted with baskets by Lowerre, Quilty, and Dunn to increase the lead to 42-27 at 4:27.
 
Eastern Nazarene refused to give in. Franco came in with the three pointer, tightening the gap to eight, 41-49, with 24 seconds remaining. Ariola ended the third with two good free throws, the Hawks ahead by ten going into the last quarter.
 
The first two minutes remained scoreless for both teams until Walther hit a jumper for the Hawks at 7:09, and then two good free throws a minute later. Nicole Greer (Odenton, Md.) landed the first basket of the quarter for the Lions with 5:50 to go. That would help start an Eastern Nazarene run, scoring on a streak landing ten quick points within two minutes. Thanks to Cooper the gap was almost eliminated, the score 58-55 with two minutes to go.
 
Mata hit a crucial three-pointer for the Lions at 1:55 to tie the game. Ariola came in with the game saving lay-up at 1:25 to put the Hawks back on top. Quilty advanced the lead to four with a layup assisted by Dunn, 62-58. Both teams fell into foul trouble in the final quarter. Lowerre was fouled by Mata and landed both free throws, the gap now a comfortable six with 28 seconds left. Ariola was fouled twice and landed all four free throws, ending the game to give the Hawks the win, 68-60.
 
Cooper led Eastern Nazarene with 11 points, along with four rebounds. Fraser also put in ten points and three rebounds. Grays stayed alert under the hoop gaining seven rebounds.
 
Lowerre had a solid game for the Hawks, leading the team in points with 14, as well as six rebounds. Quilty earned 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Ariola scored 13 points. Dunn played a large defensive role for the Hawks, snagging eight rebounds.
 
Roger Williams (9-7, 6-3 CCC) will travel to Wenham, Mass. this Saturday to play opponent Gordon College at one. Eastern Nazarene (10-6, 5-4 CCC) will have home court advantage this Saturday afternoon against Endicott College.
