Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - Endicott College took over sole possession of first place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 3-1 win over the Roger Williams University Volleyball team Saturday afternoon.
Â
Both teams came into the day undefeated at 6-0 in the CCC. With the win, the Gulls are in the driver's seat for a first-round bye for the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament.
Â
Prior to the match, the Roger Williams seniors;
Katie Thieret (St. Louis, Mo.),
Abby Gordon (Glastonbury, Conn.),
Sarah McAniff (Redding, Conn.),
Kristen Boyer (Ephrata, Pa.),
Brittany McMullen (Lancaster, Pa.), and
Cassandra Minogue (Manorville, N.Y.); were all honored for their play over their careers as Hawks.
Â
The Hawks found themselves playing from behind the entire first set after Endicott jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. The Gulls would eventually build that to a 16-7 advantage and looked poised to ease to the opening set win. However, the Hawks would mount a comeback, chipping away at the deficit until they pulled within one on set point. Endicott would call a timeout and take the game on a kill by Lauren Sheehan (Bainbridge Island, Wash.).
Â
The second set was a tight affair, with five ties and neither team leading by more than five points. With Roger Williams holding a 14-9 lead, Endicott rallied back to knot the game at 20 apiece. Yet the Hawks closed out the set with a 5-1 run, capped off by a Boyer kill to even the match.
Â
Endicott pushed ahead early on in the third set, forcing an uphill battle for RWU. The Gulls took an 8-3 lead that would prove to be just a bit too much for Roger Williams to overtake. The Hawks pulled back within one (14-15) but were never able to regain the lead since the first point of the game. EC eventually came away with the 25-19 win.
Â
The final set was another neck-and-neck race between both teams. EC broke a 5-all tie and extended the lead to four (13-10), but five straight Hawk points put RWU back on top by two. The turning point came after an Endicott timeout with the Gulls holding a slim 21-20 lead. Tori McIntyre (San Diego, Calif.) finished off RWU with four straight kills to earn the match for EC.
Â
Emma Mancini (Lynnfield, Mass.) led EC with 18 kills and four aces. McIntyre added 12 kills and 15 digs, while Mareena Cotfelter (Poulsbo, Wash.) and Zoey Gifford (Natick, Mass.) finished with 22 and 18 assists, respectively.
Â
Boyer led all with 20 kills in addition to ten digs.
Molly Quilty (Duxbury, Mass.) added 13 kills and six blocks (two solo, four assist).
Julia Fields (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) handed out 46 assists, while
Maria Batas (Merrick, N.Y.) going for 30 digs.
